Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me
He looks very sweet. Hopefully that temperament will stay that way, make it easier for Angie! My boa is a real sweetie, and always has people reacting with amazement at his temperament. Especially since he is 8 feet now. His nose doesn't look as bad as I was expecting! Give him lots of love and attention. Get that URI under control, and you'll probably have a very sweet snake. Selmac was afraid and clingy when we first got him as he had not been supported enough when being handled, and had been tossed around and dropped a lot (teenage owners who didn't really know what to do). Good luck

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me
Well the boa is off to the vet this evening. (we haven't named him yet.)
It currently appears that I will be injecting him with his medication for the URI. Angie brought him with her to work and Steve is waiting for her. (He normally leaves at 4 but is sticking around as a favor for us.) I have never injected a snake with medication before, so this should be an experience. lol I will keep everyone updated with how he is doing and if I learn anything from his physical. (I requested a blood panel be done.) |

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me
injecting a snake is waaaaaaay easier than injecting iguanas,, or Oscar the tortoise for that matter, lol. Let me know if you have issues I have done a ton of them.

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me
It looks like you've got everything undercontrol. I wouldn't worry about giving the injections as Nicole said it's very easy though still a two person job. And luckly he's not agressive. The vet will most likly give you a 14 day treatment to be given every 2 days so you'll have time to make this an art. I wish you all the best and keep us updated.

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me
We had to give antibiotic injections to Jonas the corn snake after he was injured. It is really quite easy once the fear of doing it wrong is gone. Good luck.

Re: Boa Adoption - A First For Me
"The Boa" received the first of 7 shots last night. He was prescribed 0.72 CC of Ceftazadine. That is to be administered every 3 days. He weighs in at 7lbs 13 oz.
Other than being slightly underweight and mildly dehydrated, he is actually in decent health considering his prior living conditions. He showed me a bit of spunk this morning when he decided to latch onto my tricep in an attempt to "eat" me. lol (I am at fault for the bite.) I had just been sitting on the couch and "Bones", our cat, was rubbing all up under my arm. I am currently thawing out a jumbo rat for him to eat. I have a second one on stand by if the first turns out to not be enough of a meal. I may find myself grabbing guinea pigs sooner than later. (They are easier to get than rabbits for me.) On another note: Angie overcame her biggest fear last night when her and Dr.Dyre were left in the room alone prior to the shot being administered and Angie had to hold him (The Boa) down. Getting her to touch one of the snakes has always been a project and last night she jumped in and grabbed a hold of him like she does with cats and dogs. This was a massive step forward in her over-coming her fear. She was shocked at how docile he was and how he did almost nothing when receiving the shot. When she got home, she even released him from his pilowcase into his enclosure all by herself. ![]() |
