reiterate the search button?

I have so many questions and everytime I have one the first thing I do is click the search button to see if anyone has already asked it and way more than not it is answered. I know before my disappearance everyones first reply was to search when it was a common question such as "what do I feed this...?" "how big does this get...?" I know alot of the time a question will vary and you may need a more specific answer and that is understandable.
Since I have returned I have notice alot of the newer members just ask alot of basic questions with out even bothering to search. Or even looking at other recent post of the same question not even two or threes threads down.

I feel a bit hypocritical because of my Savannah monitor feeding question, but I did search before I started a new thread and I didnt find the answer I was looking for.

Maybe I am just being a bit inconsiderate of the newer members but I find it rather irritating to look through a dozen threads of the same question over and over.

This is starting to sound like a rant and before I develop it into an all out rant I was just curious if we had decided to give up on enforcing the search button and just decided to answer the same question everytime it has been asked?

Re: reiterate the search button?

a few times i've noticed that the same questions are directed to a thread that already deals with the question.

Re: reiterate the search button?

*sigh*

Yes, I agree. I could go onto a rant but I wont. I will stress how EASY a simple search is. And lots of times If I don't find my answer here, I go to Google. Then if I'm confused and still uncertain, I ask.

I want to bring up another point. Can we put a link to the caresheets somewhere idiot proof? Like a button that links you directly to the care sheets and says Reptile Care sheets right on it?? Maybe a nice bright RED.

*edit*
and make it available on EVERY page, be it the main forum page, the recent threads page or the furry forum.

Re: reiterate the search button?

I think that would be a good idea as well, I know when I returned I was looking for a sav monitor one and I had a hard time finding the caresheets only to realize we dont have the one I was looking for lol

Re: reiterate the search button?

I think alot of the newer members ask the questions because they want to get involved in conversation, introducing themselves, getting to know other members and so on, basically what a forum does. If we wanted it to be just search related to questions we could have just added a Q and A website. I know I have answered the same questions over and over again since day 1 of HC but as a Moderator I never let it bother me, I enjoy it actually.

Re: reiterate the search button?

I understand that and it makes sense but it seems like nonsense to have 5 of the first 7 ball python threads to big "What size mouse should blank eat?" (Just an example) I know we dont strictly want to be a q and a but it seems to me just introducing your self and sharing your critters would be a better way to have a conversation come about

But I am going to leave this thread alone now I just wanted to voice it remembering that questions like that use to get the "use the search" response and was mostly just curious why it didnt seem to be enforced like it was

I agree, most people want to do more than basic research. There is plenty of info on the web that doesn't have the ability to ask questions and relate. I mean really, If I could,"Just read the book", Why would I be interested in a forum?

Re: reiterate the search button?

As a relative newby I have been very encouraged by how helpful everyone has been in answering my questions and I have not ever been made to feel like I was just asking an "irritating" question.

On the other hand I have found it difficult to navigate around the site and find things on my own and would appreciate it being a little more "idiot proof". for instance when I had a question about feeding my iguana I was directed to the feeding list and had to ask how to get there.

Re: reiterate the search button?

point number one of my visual communication classes from school. If you have to explain your point (ie, point something out) then its not working in the first place. Apparently people aren't finding the information they need right away. we need to work on making more obvious. Personally, I'm never on the home page except for the minute I log in. I usually just hit "recent posts"which does not have a link to the caresheets. It may actually help to make them a different color on the main page as well. Red or something, so they stand out.
