How safe to buy and ship snakes

On the welcome thread I posted about wanting to get a "creature" to put in my tanks, at first my SO was NOT wanting a snake, now he decides that he wants one. He found a Kenyan Sand Boa, I found an add and the guy said he ships and can ship a pair of eating babies to me and have them here on Friday. I am wondering how safe it is to buy animals like this sight unseen. I am sure its done all the time, also he safes he assures live arrival and healthy babies, but again, is there anything else I should look for.
I have read about the Boas and my SO is sure he wants a small snake like this. The ones we are thinking about are babies and 4 inches long, the guy says they are eating pinkies and very healthy.
Please let me know if you would go this way or find a palce and buy local.
Thanks

Re: How safe to buy and ship snakes

The actual shipping if fairly safe a risk free if done properly and during good weather. The thing is if you trust the seller to be truthful in what he's saying. Though the same is true with most pet shops. I've only had one time a animal was misrepersented to me. Depending on the price offered it may be worth the risk depending on how you feel about the seller and how he awsers your questions.

Re: How safe to buy and ship snakes

Animals are sold and shipped all the time with fine results. And then again sometimes things do go wrong.
A lot depends on whether the shipper knows what he is doing.
As with anything done sight unseen its a matter of whether you trust the seller or not.

Re: How safe to buy and ship snakes

that is what I am wondering....I saw the add and he responded but hasn't answered all my questions, I asked if he was a breeder or just had a few snakes and he will not answer me. He just says he is pay pal verified.
He said it only cost him $14 to mail overnight to me for 2 baby snakes.
Maybe I will just hold off or even wait for another show to come to town...I would hate to fall for a scam like they do with selling puppies, where you send the money and the dog never comes.....Also the shipping seemed low as most places charge at least 35 to ship overnight.
But I will tell the deal it was 35 each for a pair of Sand Boas that are 4 inches long and eating well, and 14 to ship.
Maybe it is all on the up and up, just want to make sure as I have never bought reps over the net before'

Re: How safe to buy and ship snakes

i've never bought anything live over the internet before. if it were something like an animal especially if it was one that you can't go and check out personally for yourself i'd probably hold off on it but thats just me. i like to see and hold my critters before I buy them. i'd vote for waiting for the next show to come around because then you can talk to the breeders themselves and see and handle the animals before you purchase. plus they can give you info on how well the creatures are eating and their overall health. this way you can also get all your research together and have the enclosure ready before anything comes home. whichever you decide, good luck!
