Stolen Tortoises - Birch Run, MI

For those who frequent the 'net classifieds or are from the area -----

From Jane:
"Sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning someone broke into the Wilderness Trails wildlife park in Birch Run, Michigan. They took 6 large tortoises...4 female Sulcatas ranging in size from 12 to 65 pounds, and 2 Leopard torts 10 inches and 20+ inches. The Leopard torts belong to us, Mid Michigan Reptile Rescue, and were on loan to the park.

If anyone happens to see any tortoises fitting this description for sale in the Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois area I'd appreciate a heads up. Thanks!

Re: Stolen Tortoises - Birch Run, MI

That's sad that someone would actually do that. I hope they know how to look after them as well.

How scary! I hope they at least know how to care for them, and I hope they get caught and have the book thrown at them! I would be worried sick if it was my Oscar!

Wow. I had no idea that the black market on tortoises was that good that it would prompt someone to break into a place like that and steal them.

It's good to let us know. I don't think I'll personally see anything way out here, just in case...

I don't know what the matter is with some people.

Wow! How could they do that. It's just not right. I'll pass this on to some other people I know, so they can watch for anything. Hope they get caught and everyone finds they're way back home soon.

Re: Stolen Tortoises - Birch Run, MI

Hello,

It is certainly an unfortunant state of affairs. I would speculate to guess though that someone so brazzen likely had the torts placed before they actually stole them. Holding onto something like that, unless there is a decent size breeder or "rising" breeder in the local area would be foolish.

I too hope they are recovered and unharmed.

Re: Stolen Tortoises - Birch Run, MI

That is completly horriable. Who would honestly want a tort so bad that they would have to steal some? I hope you find them safe soon.
