escapee replacement
Well, our bullfrog escaped. We had raised her from tadpole-ism to her current size, approx. 1.5 inches long. I'm actually not too worried about her because there is a pond right across the street, and I suspect that she made it over there. I think it was just her time to move on. We were planning to release her eventually anyway. My daughter had named her Alice. Funny name for a bullfrog. It's right up there with our captive bass name Kayla.
Anyway, I'd like to use the empty 10g aquarium for another herp. I'm thinking of a salamander, but not sure. What ideas do y'all have? We already have a variety of frogs and toads, plus 2 AFTs and 2 leopard geckos and a Russian tortoise. I'm not opposed to other species of same. I am, however, less than fond of snakes, and am opposed to anything dangerous. So, what do you pros consider to be a neat herp to add to our collection? What I'll probably do is take your suggestions and look for an abandoned or deformed one to adopt. I have that mushy heart. BTW, I've been seriously herping since late spring, and added several species over the summer. I consider myself somewhere between a novice and an amateur, but sure not an expert! Finally, the herps we have are all doing well. Our only attrition was stomatitis in our first AFT, and a couple frog/toad escapees. I've certainly gotten the hang of gecko modulation since then. Quite frankly, frogs, toads and crickets humble me with their escape skills. My record in outsmarting them is just marginal. Thanks for your input. Jennifer Gal p.s. as to 'local' wildlife, both the frog and the bass are rescues that we've rehabbed for re-release. The stories behind both are not of immediate relevance. |

Re: escapee replacement
Unfortunately, I don't know if a 10g tank is really a big enough home for anything. It's almost impossible to get a proper heat gradient in a tank that small. You might want to consider trading that tank in for a larger version. Then there are a ton of little lizards that might be fun to keep. Personally, I like the little firebelly newts. They're especially nice if you can get them before the metamorphose.
