SmartPill Corp. Begins Trials in Animals

The SmartPill GI Monitoring System is now being tested for animal use

Mar 26, 2007

Buffalo, NY — Monday, March 26, 2007 – SmartPill Corp., a leading developer of capsule-based medical devices based in Buffalo, N.Y., has begun trials of the SmartPill GI Monitoring System for use in animal health.

Already used to evaluate human patients, the SmartPill pH.p Capsule and SmartPill GI Monitoring System aid in the evaluation of gastrointestinal motility disorders. The SmartPill pH.p Capsule is a wireless, ingestible medical device — about the size of a large vitamin pill — that measures pressure, pH and temperature and provides gastric emptying time, combined small and large bowel transit time, and total transit time. The Capsule travels through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, collecting and transmitting data to the SmartPill Data Receiver worn by the patient. When the test is complete, the data is downloaded to a computer for analysis.

The animal trials are being conducted at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine by Dr. Frank M. Andrews, DVM, Professor and Section Chief, Large Animal Medicine, and Dr. Robert Denovo, DVM, Professor and Head, Small Animal Clinical Sciences. The primary aim of the trial is to validate the use of the SmartPill for the measurement of transit time, pH, temperature and luminal pressure in the gastrointestinal tracts of horses and dogs.

“We anticipate that the SmartPill will be an excellent new tool for measuring pH, pressure and temperature in our animal patients,” said Dr. Andrews. “Veterinarians in both clinical and research settings will now have an easier and less invasive method for evaluating GI motility disorders in animal patients.”

“We’re very excited about the prospect of being able to offer SmartPill to the veterinary market,” said Leslie Hornung, Vice President of Marketing, SmartPill Corp. “Because these patients cannot tell us what symptoms they are experiencing, a device like SmartPill is very attractive because it provides so much information in a single test.”

SmartPill will be exhibiting at the 2007 American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine Forum in Seattle, Wash., in June.

I find it a wonderful idea that they are doing something like this. Took them long enough to think of it too. Lol

Re: Smart Pill.

Hmm now if only they can condense the technology down small enough for use in an anole

Great idea though, i've heard of it for human use.
