No, it's not.

In all fairness, its because that is the way they have been taught as they were being raised. And unfortunately its been that way for generations! I grew up in an area where the general attitude was if you see a snake, you kill it! But apparently I mutated along the way!

The reasoning is because of the presence of snakes which are dangerous to people and their livestock. I don't condone the attitude but I understand it. And I make it a point to go out of my way to re-educate people at every opportunity!

As much as it angers me to see or even hear of such cruelty, what Merlin had to say does put things into perspective.

If you can get one person with a "see snake, kill snake" attitude to think twice the next time they encounter a snake, you have made a difference. We can all make a difference by educating those who have adopted the wrong idea about these creatures. Change comes about over time by people like us doing are part in small ways. It just takes time and dedication.

This thread has a very good point, some people are just too into the stereotype that a snake will 'chase and kill you' if you walk past it, some seem to think thats true! Even with a garter snake! grrr
One time while my dad and I were in the car, we saw a HUGE black racer sunnning on the road, so we stopped to herd it of so it would not get hit. When I got a stick so I could guide it off, I saw a huge scar slanted right accross the skull and by the eye! The snake was also very slow in its reflexes, it took 5 seconds for it to look at the stick that touched it!

Some people are just.......GRRRR
