trap questions
This may be somewhat random, but does anyone know if this kind of trap has a name? http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nreos/wild/i...e/FIG10A_2.gif Also, where can one purchase these things and are they expensive? Are they easy to make yourself? I know they're good for trapping turtles and other interesting aquatic lifeforms and I just thought I'd learn about them now for future reference.

hmmm looks very simalar to funnel traps we make for research trips... these things catch so many things! had some strange catches haha... mongoose, even a bird! but they are really good for catching snakes, lizards and scorpions if setup with a drift fence...very easy to create and setup.

I don't know the name but I know where to get one for $15...(Plus airfare from MD to the local White Elephant store)
I've seen them labeled as 'crawdad traps' up in Newport, but those all have opening on either end....

It looks similiar to a minnow trap. Only difference is the minnow trap has a funnel at both ends. Most any bait shop will have them maybe even walmart. I hope this helps. Jimi

That is a minnow trap.
And they wouldn't be the hard to make with some 1/4 or 1/2 inch hardware cloth.
What are you trying to trap?

Hello,
Its funny, I knew what that was the moment I saw it! As stated, it is sold as both a minnow trap and a crawdad trap. I can purchase those at my local bait shop.
They are not difficult to make on your own either. The philosophy behind the system is that the animal can enter through the opening, but do to the funnel shape opening, they have an extremely difficult time locating the same hole to escape. This technique is also used on lobster traps.
If you are looking for one of these, look in one of the larger bait shops in your area. One of them will have them or will order one for you.

I know they make them larger too. I swear there has to be a name for them other than just "minnow trap" though, cause the size I'm looking for would be rather ineffective for trapping small minnows. But now I've got a good lead, thanks guys I'll check out some stores and maybe make my own sometime.
I'm thinking of employing one to trap turtles, and anything else that may happen into it. Mostly just for the experience and for photographic purposes.

Matt, check your local fish and game laws prior to making one, I know here in Virginia the size of the opening is restricted to PREVENT you from capturing turtles, frogs, and larger fish.

Good call, Ken. Well it'll be a while before I look for one anyway, so I'll find out before then. I may not even get one yet, but wanted to learn more about them while I remembered to ask.
