That sounds like a pretty cool trap. I've seen somewhat similar ones that use the same floating method, but yours sounds way better. The ones I've seen have a metal lining on the inside edge of the float to keep the turtles from climbing out, as opposed to a hinge. The idea is that they come up onto the float to bask, and possibly dive back into the water on the inside edge of the trap, thus being contained by the hardware cloth.
Your trap sounds a lot more effective, not to mention safer for the turtles. I have thought of modifying the above trap to include a log on the inside, anchored to the walls by string or rope, but yours would still be more effective I think. Either way though, I have no need for a trap yet, but I'll keep my eyes peeled for such a design.
