THe worst rescue ever

Yesterday morning I got a phone call from the girlfriend of the rescue with the snakes I am trying to get. In tears and desperation she asked that I please come to her house and talk to her about what is going on in that rescue, after two hours of her telling me that the animals were abused and starving and were very ill, I decided to go and talk to her.

I have had enough! I have never seen anything so repulsive in my life!

She was absolutely desperate, we met at her house and she showed me the ones there which had some horror stories in themselves, although nothing like the ones that were at his house. She was desperate for me to take a sulcata that was being starved or fed fruit loops. A little out of my league!! She asked me if I would go over and look at the other ones in his house and show her what was wrong. She stated the only knowledge she had in reptiles was what he told her! Which I told her was wrong and incorrect information..

So here is what I saw when I walked in, I have never seen anything so horrible: NO uvb lights on any of the iguanas, 1 heat lamp per cage which consisted of a 150 watt light bulb attached to the side of the cage where the iguanas were climbing on it and laying on it (explains where Baby Dragons burns came from) THey are all burned and 1 itook out is so burnt with a respitory infection that I thought it died on my shoulder, only the breathing was so far apart and so deep when he took the breaths that he is as good as dead there was no food whats so ever for any of them and they had obviously been starved, there were dead birds in the bottom of cages, and dead guinea pigs everywhere! ( I was wrong about the furry creatures, he is NO good for them either) Cages were hideous and nasty!

THe snakes were so awful!!WEll beyond what I thought! Their lips were curled up on top and badly deformed and the bottom ones were just rotting away

He has one that came into him powerfed and he cut off food to help it lose weight It now lays on its side, I have never seen anything like that, and the skin just hangs off

the conclusion to this is I called the bird rescue, who immediately came over to help me, and he brought the cavy rescue.
To make a long story short we gave him no option of surrendering the birds and cavies and reptiles or we were calling the police and the news. He stated he wants us to help him and to teach him. We took most of the birds and loaded them up, and all the cavies, I got stuck with a HUGE severely underfed sulcata, ! iguana that has severe Metabolic Bone Disease, burns, dehydration, abcesses everywhere, etc etc, and 1 Psychotic cockatiel thjat the bird rescue had no room in the truck for (made for a long ride home )

We told him he has 48 hours to get the three igs to the vet that I cannot take and the three snakes, if not we are turing him in, his girlfriend is willing to sign statements against him, so he is stuck! He seemed sincere in wanting the help, but we shall see!

I am done playing around with him, I cried the whole two hour ride home and hardly slept at all! I will follow this to the end and if those animals die I want to see him held responsible!

I will post pics tonight of the HUGE sulcata and the poor ig.

Thanks to all of you who have helped me in this situation!!!! I really appreciate it!!

Good job Nicole. That is so sad . I dont know how anyone can harm an animal, it just blows my mind. The only reason he is probably being sincere is that he is up a creek without a paddle and only says he wants help. Maybe sometime in jail with no food, water, heat, etc might do him some good . Please make sure you keep us posted on everything.

Poor animals.
Even with that description, I think I canīt even begin to imagine what you must have felt.

Nicole,
Have courage and keep up your fantastic work !
Those animals desperately need you and more people like you !

Even though you have taken away most of his animals I would still take action. He is not going to learn anytihng if all of the other rescues are willing to take up his slack. It's a sad story that I hear all to often. I wish you the best of luck, but it's not sounding good for most of them.

Sometimes you have to assess the quality of life on poorly treated rescues and ask yourself if they would be better off put down. It's a pity that we can't save them all, but it sounds like some of them may have been tortured to the point of no return by him.

I agree. The time for feeling like you owe this guy something as a fellow "rescuer" (and I use the term EXTREMELY loosely! )is over. Its time to bring in the authorities.
You tried to offer him advice and he blew you off and actually had the gall to insult YOU!
His request for help is because he realizes that he has been found out and you have him by the short hairs and he is in big trouble.
He needs to be shut down NOW!

i would definitely take action against him because that's just plain wrong!! how dare he! he doesn't want real help he just does it in hopes everyone will get off his back. he'll just keep doing it again if he's not stopped.

i'm glad that a bunch were taken away and that now other people have seen what its like in there. definitely keep up the good work. even if all of the stories don't end with happy endings they are far better off than being with him.

Sounds to me like he is more of a hoarder....conditions warrant this...its a sickness and they usually just take in more and more animals and get in way over their heads....a very sad situation....and charges usually end up being dropped but at least they can stop him from owning pets again....hopefully

Kudos to you Nicole for helping out these poor animals....

That's one of the worst things I've heard in a long time. You did a good thing. I agree, though, that you need to get the rest of those animals out of his hands. He definitely needs to be shut down completely as a rescue. It would be a good thing to call the authorities on him.

I will follow this through to the end! His girlfriend is on the paperwork for the rescue as Vice president. THat is the only reason we did not call the police immediately, as she was the one who called me begging for the help and is trying to fix it. We left the stipulations very clear, 48 hours, for proof of seeing the vet and medication or euthanize. She agrees to this, so I have to hold up to my word, I also made it very clear that I will hold up to my word and will call the authorities if that is not done!

The snakes are a huge problem for me to take because they are very large (as large as very sick snakes can be) and infested, and I mean infested with mites. Let alone what ever other contagious issues they have. I have nowhere to put them that would not pose a threat to the rest already in my care. I cannot risk that, as I have worked so hard to get these to where they are now! However, I have someone who offered there home temporarily as a place to put them and treat them as long as I do all the work and of course foot the huge bill! So it is something I am pondering, Derich the snake guy says not to do it because the chances are not good. So I am in a state of confusion as what to do with them!

I think all of you are right about the whole "help" thing. He is desperate and knows I am done playing as is the rest of us! He also knows We do have him by the "short hairs".

It was a little amusing as we started taking animals with the cages and loading them up, he stated "hey I need those cages" we all simply stopped what we were doing and I took out my cell phone and asked if he wanted to make a theft complaint to the police because we would all stay here and wait for them!! He declined LOL, imagine that
I will definately keep you posted, but as for now I have a lot of phone calls to make, and round up Oscar the tortoise, and I need a Motrin from the migraine I am getting from the bird who wont shut up! LOL
