I am so mad, wait until you hear this

So just about 30 minutes ago the phone rings and it is the other person who does "rescue". From all of you who have read my threads on baby dragon you will know who I am talking about (my newest rescue). He states to me " so Nicole, I hear you have turned down 2 large male Iguanas and an albino boa" I answered yes and he started lecturing me on "how do I call myself a rescue and turn down animals, a real rescue does not turn anything down" I responded that I know my limits and can only have so many and take care of them properly at the same time. I also explained to him that I am not qualified to take in certain species for instance alligators, crocs, venomous species, and certain large snakes. He said then how do you again, call yourself a reptile rescue when you discriminate against certain species.
Can you believe this!! This coming from the man who has had two red tail boas with mouth rot for over a year and is treating with betadine only The lip on one is curling inwards which tells me they need antibiotics.
This also coming from the man who had Baby Dragon and gave her a hot rock which burned her severely and he never took her to the vet, ever!
Ooh I am so mad! I am still in shock!
Now really my point to this was how much help would I be to a croc or alligator when I have absolutely no experience with them and when I am missing limbs. His response was live and learn and that I really need to think about the negative impact I have on the community for turning them down!
I have no business owning or fostering or saving those kind of dangerous animals when I have no experience, he very highly disagreed!
OOh I am so mad!

sorry to hear that, but it is good that you know your limits, a real rescue can properly take care of the reptiles it takes in, not just take them in and put them in a cage and not know how to treat them. keep your head up you seem to be doin great so far.

Knowing your limits means that no one will have to "rescue" reptiles from your care!
As difficult as it is, trying to ignore the words of idiots is good for your mental health in any area of life.

I'm really sorry, I know you want to stay on good terms with this guy but if I were you i'd have half a mind to sock him in the teeth. It's ridiculous that he would say that.
You really should work on either educating him about the animals he tortures or work on getting some one to pay attention to the abuse and neglect that is going on there.

Hello,

I too am glad to see you know your limits. Rescuing abandoned and mistreated animals is just that, rescuing. If you can not provide the animals with a home better than the previous one, then you have done nothing to "rescue" the animal.

On the other issue, you could always forward me his email address and website. lol

Knowing one's limits is important for both you and the animals you are rescuing. Once people learn that you will rescue reptile the phone calls and the e-mails just keep coming. You hate to turn something down, as you are afraid that it will be placed in a bas situation. You are correct in being mad and upset over the verbal attaches you received. But remember you are doing the best you can for the animals you currently have in your rescue. From your posts you have been taking in some really bad cases in the last few weeks. Good luck and I'm glad you learned to say NO, I’m all most there! LOL

Your doing the right Nicole and I dont think anyone would look down upon you for it (except for the jack*** that called you). Good job on knowing your limits, some people dont and take on to much at a time.

Please do forward the info to Rich, he is SO GOOD at responding to ***** like that

you could also look into maybe some other rescues in the area that are capable to taking care of the animals you feel you shouldn't. Maybe if when you have to turn someone down, it would be better for you and the animal if you could give the current owner of the animal a name and number of someone to try... Even if that person or rescue can't take the animal, maybe they know who could....

Zoos, shelters, animal sanctuaries and other rescue facilities are frequently quoted as refusing to take in animals of certain kinds and/or quantities. Why? Because they know that they don't have the resources or the know-how to care for anything and everything. It's better to refuse care for an animal if you know you don't have the ability to care for it properly, than accept everything and have them lead unhealthy, unhappy lives.

I think some people take pride in thinking that they can "rescue" an animal, but they don't really understand what all goes into it.

my goodness Nicole, what an idiot he is! it's a shame you need to keep the lines of communication open because he sounds like a ****ing ***** to me. i think it's amazing what you (and anyone who runs a responsible rescue) does, and it's very important to know your limits. in my eyes it's better to give excellent care to a few animals than to give no care to many.
