Heat Lamps Warnings!

"A pet iguana died in an apartment blaze Saturday morning that was sparked by a lamp used to heat the lizard. "
edmontonsun.com - Edmonton News - Caged iguana dies in blaze
"Jansen said the cause of the blaze was accidental and is believed to be electrical. He said the family that lives in the house had a heat lamp or a type of warming rock for a pet iguana they kept in a tank and the fire started in that area. The iguana did not survive the blaze, but a family cat found hiding upstairs was rescued, Jansen said."

Poor iguana.

Just like with any household appliance, you need to make sure that your heat lamps aren't malfunctioning. It's a real shame that this wasn't caught sooner.

I wonder, though, if it wasn't a heat rock instead. That would be right down in the substrate, most of which is pretty flamable. Newspaper, paper towels, and wood chips would all be likely to flare right up from a spark from a heat rock. And they're known for malfunctioning.
