Has anyone heard about a recycled paper substrate?

Hi!
I'm reading Adam Black's "Crested Gecko" and he mentions a recycled paper substrate. The book was printed in 2005 and probably written before that so it should be out already. Does anyone know anything about this?

Here's the quote:
Quote:
Several companies are manufacturing another type of substrate that is made from shredded recycled paper. It is absorbent, can be easily spot-cleaned, and the geckos can readily burrow in it.
Thanks =)

I think they may be talking about Eco-bedding, which is made from 100% recycled paper...I don't have any experience with it, so I can't say if I think it's any good or not, but here's a website with some information on it:

Small Pet Eco-Bedding: Recycled Pet Bedding / Nesting Material

Hope that helps

Wouldn't a high humidity environment cause the material to go moldy pretty fast?

I would think so...I used paper bedding once (not recycled, it was Carefresh) for small animals, and I didn't like it at all...I felt like it got too moist really fast. Seems like in a high humidity environment for reptiles, the problem would be even worse.

Yesterday's News is a kity littler made from compressed pellets of newsprint, it might work for a dry tank but I have a feeling it is designed to crumble and clump when wet.

Alot of the blue tongued skink people recommend carefresh but personally I hate the stuff, its dusty, clumpy, expensive and messy. That and it has an odd smell that I don't like coming home to.

I have also heard reports of problems with Carefresh. Apparently when snakes deficate in it, the litter can stick to them, and get pulled back inside the cloaca and cause infections.

Yikes...I knew I didn't like that stuff when I tried it for my rat and my rabbit. Glad I never tried it for snakes!

i use carefresh for my snakes and have not had any issues with it. then again they're corns and a rosy boa so they don't need a humid environment.
