Beginner Snake questions

Hi again,
I was told a Dumeril's Ground Boa was good for beginner and so I was wondering if this was true. i was doing research on it and I read that it could kill my guinea pigs if it got out which is a big concern. also my mom was liking the ball python for a snake cause we dont really care about the picky eating problem cause were pretty laid back so any care info on them would be great.thanks again and happy holidays.

Dumerals are shy snakes and reputed to be a bit nippy as youngsters. They will cost considerably more to purchase than anything else we have discussed. They will also get larger than anything we have talked about so far and will easily kill and consume your guinea pig. This also means more cost in feeders and a larger enclosure.
You seem to be focusing on the safety of your pigs and this is commendable but you are missing where your true focus should be. The snake MUST have an escape proof enclosure, no matter what species you decide to go with! All snakes are escape artists and if there is any way out they are guaranteed to find it! For the safety of both the snake and any other pets you have the enclosure MUST be secure.

I wouldnt keep the Gps any where close to the snakes tank, as theyd smell them and think its feeding time. A boa will get about 8 foot and eat small rabbits. It wouldnt be a good starter. There are some smaller boas out there.

I would still suggest a king or a corn. Give me a few mins and I will get you some info on some other pythons.

Ok I did some googling around. I found that savu, spotted, and childrens pythons stay around 3ft to 4ft. But I would research them more than my quick glance at sizes and stuff.

If I recall ringed pythons stay a smaller size but the are pricey and I think that they get big enough to eat the gp. But i'm not positive on this!!

Ringed pythons dont stay small, they get a good girth to them.

Airion,

We own King Snakes, Common Boas, Ball Pyhons, a Rat snake and a corn. My favorite are the Ball Pythons. In my opinion they are the most docile and best snakes for a beginner and alot cheaper than a Dumeril's Ground Boa. Althought they can be fussy eaters at times, they are easy to handle. But as Merlin said you need to be concerned with them trying to escape! Good luck with what ever you get!

If you decide to get a python or boa I wouldnt keep it anywhere near feeders or GPs,for the simple fact when you get ready to open the enclosure it could have a feeding response, and bigger snakes really hurt!Colubrids are good starters.
