iguana?

Ok I work for a local goverment. i drive a street sweeper... and I was driving down a main road I seen something laying in the middle of the road.. as I got closer I seen that it was a 44" iguanna... i stoped and picked it up before it got hit. i took it back to the shop and called the police.... they didnt know what to do with him and asked if I knew what to do. i said the VERY basics all I know that he needs to stay warm and some things that he will eat... but from there I dont even have a clue! i'm not keeping him for a long time 2-3 months and then I was going to find a more homely home. so any do's and dont's will be helpful!

Yikes! You found an iguana in the road it it let you pick it up? Based solely upon that I'm going to say get it to the vet quick and get him checked over! A healthy iguana would have bolted for the tallest structure around and then would have proceeded to shred you to bits if you tried to dislodge it.

You have some very intensive reading to do, start here: Iguana Care Information

Iguanas are one of the hardest herps to care for and they require very specific care. They need alot of space, a strict diet, specialized lighting and heating, high humidity, and alot of patience...and VERY deep pockets. My iguana was free but i've easily spent more than $800 on him in the last year and a half.

They are also territorial and can inflict major damage.

I commend you for taking on such a challenge but if it seems like alot more care than you are able to provide we will help you find a suitable rescue or other alternative solution.

Lacey is correct in saying that iguanas are difficult and expensive, but for now start off with keeping him warm and feeding him properly like with collard greens, mustard greens, escarole, chickory etc...

If he let you pick him up that easily, he is terribly ill, or a pet that someone lost perhaps. Not sure how you are keeping him (caged or loose) but he definitely needs heat and he also could be dehydrated...be sure he has plenty of fresh water available to him. Let us know if you have any specific questions. Good luck.....

Hello,

My turn! lol

Basic Supplies:

Large Enclosure
Heating Elements (No heat rocks)
UV Lighting
Calcium Supplement
Vitamin Supplement
Large Water Dish
Large Food Dish
Climbing Materials

Those supplies would get you started. With the iguana being so passive toward you picking it up, it is likely someones pet that escaped or is ill/injured as suggested. I too suggest a vet checkup to make sure everything is ok.

Congrats on your new addition! lol

Probably the lack of heat has him depleted of energy. Probably not that warm there lately. I agree a good vet checkup asap.

Hello,

Excellent point Mike! I never even thought of our current evening temps! Mike is correct in stating that the iguana is/was likely lethargic from the inadequate temperatures. If the iguana was "laying" on the pavement, it was attempting to extract the trapped heat in the pavement to warm itself. As the iguana thermo-regulates and stabalizes its body temps, do not be surprised if he turns into a "not so friendly" ig. I would still advise you see a vet. Who knows how long the poor guy was free roaming the neighborhood.
