Not sure if this helps Crystal, but I never feed my snakes living mice....only frozen thawed...I would never be able to handle having snakes either if I had to feed Live mice or rats. If you want some information about some snakes, why dont you take a look at our collection of care sheets. Maybe you will get an idea from them. Good luck in your quest!

Egg eaters are not commonly available and finding a supply of the right kind of eggs makes them problematical to feed.

I have corns, kings ball pythons, and a boa. None of them are fed live. I go to the freezer, grab what I need, thaw and let them get warm and dinner is served!
Almost all the snakes you will have to chose from will feed on rodents.

I've heard qual eggs work quite well for Dasypeltis sp. and are readily available on Ebay.

I have recently got my first snake and its a Californian King snake! i know how you feel about the whole mice thing but like merlin said you just get frozen mice or rats, leave them out the morning before feeding and then drop it in! its really not that bad when you see it! quite intriguing actually! then you'll love it like I do! my partner said feeding was the only reason why I could not get one.....then she saw it and now is as excited as I am!

In regards to what you need generally depends on the snake you get but in general u need Two hides (which can be an old ice cream tub with a hole in or you could go with the exo-terra or zoo-med hides that are like rocks which are cool!) one on the hot side and one on the cool side. You can have any other item within the tank for decoration, wood, plants and anything you want to make it look pretty! (although not a necessity) you need a water bowl for drinking and bathing, an in/out thermomter so yu can measure the heat gradient, a hygrometer to measure humidity, and a source of heating such as a Under Tank Heater(under tank heater). The substrate again is your choice, although some are not good for snakes such a wood chip like you use for hamsters etc but for snakes you could use newspaper, repti carpet, repti bark or aspen bedding. they are the four I would recommend (your preference) and thats it!

My setup for my hatchling all in all cost me £40 the snake cost me £20. However my snake is in a small enclosure and will need to be upgraded into a bigger viv when she grows out of it, which will cost around £60 or I might build my own.

Im no expert but its very easy to pick up and they are easy and great to care for!

Hi Crystal,

You do not need to feed live, and you shouldn't anyways! We have Ball Pythons, Boas, Corns and Kings, and I like the Ball Pythons the best. Thay dont seem to move as much or as fast as the others and are great to hold. Thay can be troublesome when feeding sometimes as they seem to like to go on hunger strikes from timr to time. As Lyn said, check out some care sheets! Good luck!
