A keeper's burn out. (Pics)

It may be that I'm the only one with this problem on the forum since I seem to be the few of us who keep hots and Crocodilians that happened to move to a state that's full of stuff 'n stuff, and won't allow me to grandfather my animals into the state, so while I wait to find the right people to teach me (I think I have some leads), I'm trying to find my way in the herp community, and since my incident two years ago, progress has been slow due to the disbelieving burn out on keeping.

It's actually gotten bad enough to consider selling all of my crocodilians not more than 6 months ago..

So, to keep values high and my hopes up, I decided to start keeping again and started with a mata.. That didn't suit me as well as I had hoped and someone offered a barter with me and within the trade sported a nifty little Mangrove monitor that someone else wanted but backed out when she arrived. So being faced with that, I placed a few ads for her. I haven't been into monitors since I was 14, so I didn't think there's a hope for her in my situation, however as no one has replied, she's starting to grow on me; even took 3 hours today to set up her enclosure to suit us both and she seems to taking a liking to it, and to my appeal, it almost appears I'm housing a baby crocodilian.. Kinda.. Well, at least with the looks of the enclosure it does..

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you went through burns outs and what did you guys do to bring you back to this part of life? I'm hoping she works out for me, I really hate just pawning off animals..

Thanks in advance and for your viewing pleasure, here's me belly dancing..

Thanks.

Hey Croc. I hear what your going through. I actually just got back in myself. I've had a couple theories on why I burned out. First I think sometimes you just need a bit of a change, different animals, different setups and so forth. But primarily I think it has a lot to do with the other things going on in your life. For example; at one point, I was working two full time jobs, still had to maintain the apartment (which I find exhausting), there was a death in the family, broke out of a bad relationship, and my best friend and I were'nt getting along. During this time I had about ten different animals total, but I also had lots and lots of house plants. I came to the realization that there were WAY too many things going on in my life. Not that I couldn't handle it, there just was no choice in what I could do. My life was pre-determined for me by everything I had tried to take on. I don't know if you experienced something similar, but for me, there were only a certain number of things I could sanely do for the day. I had spread myself too thin so finally I made sacrifices. I.E. Getting rid of pets and plants. Later I decided that I wasn't happy with that decision so I had to cut other things out. It was a matter of prioritizing. Its worked out better though. Now that things are more stable, if I find that I'm getting bored with my animals, I do a major cage redecorating. Then it doesn't look the same, so I'm not reminded of the same ol same ol. Sounds crazy but it works for me. Hope this helps a bit. Your monitor is a beauty, I'm glad shes working out for you.

I too experienced a burn-out in the mid 80's. Just so much going on in my life and I needed a change. At the time I was breeding boas and 1 day just up and sold the whole lot. I was actually out of herping for almost 10 years. After the decade battery recharge I realized how much I missed it. Now i'm into so much more species. Life sure does throw ya some curves. Hang in there Zane. nobody here that know you will ever question your passion.
Best of luck

That enclosure would probably get me right back into things no matter how burnt out I got.

But, alas, I have been recovering from a burn out as well. It's amazing how fast you'll find yourself overwhelmed, you don't think much of it until you need to do something like go on vacation. I sold all of my geckos a while ago and now wish I hadn't. I also stopped breeding my dart frogs and sold any pairs I had, which, now, I wish I hadn't. I really want to get back into the darts and crested geckos but I have to make sure not to over do it. I also setup two saltwater reef tanks recently, so they've been eating up all my time. I guess that was the cure to my burn out, get burnt out on something a lot harder and more expensive.
