The sad sad state of things...

Ok, so I work at PetSmart (i know I know...) in the grooming salon. Basically I wash dogs all day. i had a customer bring her lab mix (appropriately named "Dooky” and it had what appeared to be a decent sized snake bite on his muzzle. i asked her about it, and said that her 4 foot long ball python had bit Dooky the night before. i of coarse asked her why she allowed her ball and her enormous lab to have that close of contact, and she proceeded to tell me that she recently adopted "Dooky" and wanted him to be friends with "Princess" the ball python. So what did she do???

She put them BOTH in the bathroom.... AND THEN LEFT THEM TOGETHER!!! UNSUPERVISED!!! FOR AN HOUR!!!!

i informed her that Dooky and Princess would probably never be friends, and then she should NEVER leave them unsupervised together. EVER. and in fact, it would probably be best not to have even have Dooky around when Princess was out.
She was totally blown away by this statement. like, SHOCKED that she shouldn’t try to force her lab and her python to become "friends"

Oh. Dear. Lord.

But the encounter at work today did pose a question for me. I’ve heard of Lizards getting along fine and good with cats and some small dogs. I’ve even heard of small snakes and cats getting along in highly supervised circumstances. but a snake and a dog? has anyone heard of that working? i dono... just seems like a bad idea to me.

Thoughts? Comments?

Ok... I know I don't have much experience, but my dog actually seems to get along pretty well with my Boa. They are both pretty mellow, but the most Butler has ever really done is sniff at Bilboa a bit, even if they are right next to eachother. Bilboa just sorta sticks his tongue out, looks interested in the warmth and ignores it completely.

While I would never, ever leave them alone together, I don't see them being dangerous to achother, unless of course Butler trampled the little guy... but who would be stupid enough to put their snake down when a dog is running around anyway? Apparently that woman...

In general, dogs just don't seem to care about my snake. But all critters are different I suppose.

My boa is very calm, but does not appreciate the company of any other animal, especially my BFs moms dog...You dont know whats going through your snakes head, it may seem to be ignoring the dog, but for all you know he could be planning a nsaty bite for him next time he gets to colse...and you never know when a dog is gonna feel threatened, especially by larger boas...for the sake and safety of all your animals, just dont do things like this...

putting a ball python and a dog in the bathroom is about as responsible as me putting my pommel in the same cage as my show rooster.... blood will be spilt. That woman sounds very ignorant and irresponsible, i hope she listened to you.

Oh how can I sympathize... Let me count the ways. I work in a petstore too, I've also worked at petco previously. Isn't it amazing what some people are thinking? Back on subject, animals that normally don't congregate together, probably won't. Always exeptions to the rule however, but they should definitely be supervised.

I routinely see pictures posted of reptiles with dogs and cats and my initial reaction is,....
Boy have they been lucky so far!
Both dogs and cats are PREDATORS! No matter how docile your dog or cat may be, it is in it's genetic make up to kill and consume other animals. You can't ever get complacent and think, "Oh NO! Not my widdle Fluffy!"
Its an accident waiting to happen.

Hello,

As with all animals, unique bonds have the potential to "bloom". Under no circumstances is it intelligent to place a dog and a snake together, unsupervised, to see if they can come to a mutual understanding. lol That, to me, doesn't take an extreme amount of intelligence to understand.
