An unpleasant Petshop experience

Today was a nice day except for my visit to a local petshop which went like this. First of all you should know I actually drove extra mileage (20+ miles from home) To go to this petshop instead of the other one I normally go to thats somewhat closer. Everythiing was fine at the shop while the guy was getting me my mice then we got to the crickets and he asked me how many I needed. I said 200 and he his face made a wry look at me(He wasn't sure he had enough). and he said he COULDN'T sell me them. I then said id take what he had and he said the same thing, He couldn't. I looked at him like he was joking and, i said "are you serious why?" Then he said that he wasn't going to sell me all his crickets and that he had 400(his exaggeration of course) other customers he had that would buy crickets and he didn't want them not coming back because they didn't have enough crickets. I then replied that I needed 200 crickets and I didn't see why he couldn't sell them to me and it wouldn't make a difference who he sold them too. He then pointed to the front of the store where the owner was standing out front talking to someone and told me to ask him about the crickets, and that the owner was the one that had told him to watch the amount of crickets he sold to people. So I had to go out front and talk to the owner(who luckily for me is a nice guy) And he went and told the guy he could sell me the 200 crickets. The owner also gave me the number of a woman in town that delivers crickets to your door for cheaper than what the petshop had been selling to me for. i guess he did it because his employee gave me so much trouble.

Anyways, I know the owner was nice enough ammend the situation before I got a headache with his employee, but is it just me or was what the employee did out line? I went to the trouble of driving all the way there to give that small pet shop some business and I ended up nearly leaving with a headache. Also aren't I just as important as any other customer? Ive given that petshop over 200 bucks worth of business this summer shouldn't I be entitled to whatever number of crickets I want as long as I want to pay for them? If they were so concerned about losing customers should't they be concerned about whos actually in the shop(me) I felt very offended and while I had the initial conversation with this dude I was considering just walking out without buying anything. The real question here is should I ever go back to that petshop or should I not go back? Ive never had someone give me problems over crickets like that before. The only thing that didn't keep me from just up and leaving was the owner semi fixing a problem that his discourteous employee created. You guys ever have problems like this?
Lol I guess you could kind of call this a rant.

Since the owner fixed the problem, I would have no problem giving them further business. I would probably go out of my way to avoid that one employee, though.

This story reminds me of situations I had when I worked in retail. Consider this scenario:
Some manager makes an unreasonable set of rules that the lowly employees have to abide by. When they try to inforce the rules, customers want to "see the manager". Then the manager gets to play the understanding super-hero that gives the customer what he wants and makes the employee look and feel like a jerk in front of everybody. (Sick power-plays) The employee even gets a lecture on how to treat customers, etc.

I'm not sure if this is what happened in your situation, but there are often other aspects to a situation which are not always obvious at first glance.

the thing is that if they had the crickets there for sale it is illeagal for him to refuse you any amount of crickets (within reason like 10,000 lol) as they are for sale! they would not be in the "SHOP" and advertised for sale if they were not for sale!

The fact that the manager sorted the problem out for you straight away shows that he does value his custom so I would give him another chance, and if the gimp that served you the first time does it again just keep complaining and he will eventually lose his job unless he realises!

This happens in situations besides retail, this is an every day occurrence at the school I work in. You as the little guy get to the point where you really don't care what happens.

Yes, I have a similar problem with crickets; the one local pet store wouldn't sell me what I needed because their shipment hadn't come in yet. That was one of the reasons I decided to have them delivered to my door. This was 10+ years ago.

It may have been a situation where the employee was told to limit the amount of crickets to any one buyer due to their having had a problem with their supply. Most shops have regular customers that come in routinely and get just a few crickets at a time. They may have been trying to retain enough so that these people would still be able to get a few to feed their one small animal.

Of course its also possible that the employee was just being a lazy lout and didn't want to bother with counting out 200 crickets! I frequently run into "kids" working at petshops who really couldn't care less about waiting on you. All they want is their paycheck.

If this was the only fault you found with the store considering that it was straightened out I would continue to do business there.

Not true! When you own a business that business belongs to you and you have the right to do business or not with whomever you choose unless that refusal is based on a discriminatory practice such as racial bias.
There has been more than once that I have ordered some obnoxious individual out of my place of business!
