New project
Ok I got a entertainment stand that im planning on using to make my enclosure. i will get pictures asap (prob in a few hours)
i am facing a few problems though 1- the backing of it is made of cardboard so im guessing I would have to replace it with regular plywood. 2- if I drill a hole in plexiglass, will it break? (i also heard u can burn a hole through it) 3- would I have to seal the wood with anything or will it be fine the way it is. if u need any details just ask and like I said I will have pictures up later |

How are ya doing. Sounds like you have an interesting project on the way. On the left in the navigation bar at the bottom is a link to Herp Habitats. That would be the best place to get your enclosure building questions answered. But to answer one of your questions right now. The best way to drill plexiglass is to sandwich it between two pieces of wood. It's the sudden pull of the drillbit when it grabs that can crack the plastic.
Have fun and join us over at Herp Habitats.

I have seen some awesome enclosures constructed from home entertainment centers.
I have drilled plexiglass with a regular drill bit without problems. Just take your time and don't rush it. To seal it use polyurethane.

I've never drilled plexiglass before, but I've watched my dad do it. He put a piece of wood under the plexi when he drilled it to help support it and prevent cracking. He just drilled slowly right through and into (barely) the wood. Also, you can put clear tape on the spot where you're drilling to try to prevent cracking. (Then just peel off the tape afterwards.) You can also start a pilot hole with a smaller bit, then use the larger size bit afterwards.
Could be that Dad's methods are more superstition than scientific, but he did a fair amount of plexi drilling for my mom's artwork and always seemed to manage well. --Amy |

Weezy, you don't say what you plan to house there. A tropical animal will require a lot more work just to seal it properly.
