Instead of plugging both, you could leave one heat cable on all the time and just plug the other to the thermostat. That way the temp won't fluctuate much and will never get bellow 27C.

I don't know if it's the photo scale playing tricks on me but those ventilation holes look big to me. Did you drill them or melt them?
Are the perches secure with silicone or something like that?

As for the rest, can't help you with the temps, sorry =(

Thanks Ricardo: it's the photo angle effect: the holes are really small. (I drilled them with a Dremel tool)
The perches will be fixed on the outside of the box with tape. (At the moment they're just stuck through.
I'll have to try out that idea with the heating cables to see what will work the best, thanks for the idea.
Boy this stuff requires a lot of careful planning and testing!

Snakes are the greatest escape artists aren't they? =) You have to make everything escape proof.

I don't know if the heat cable scheme will work with your planned night drop...
