Let the Building Begin!!

Well son hit Home Depot this afternoon and bought all the necessary parts to build Iggy his new home. Son wants to do this all on his own. He was off to a great start till he hit a snag: Mom picked out the wrong T connectors (baaad Mom!...boy did I not hear the end of this one). So all the panels are made and everything is ready to be bolted together. Off to Home Depot in the morning to exchange the T connectors and hopefully by tomorrow eve the new cage will be ready.
I'm starting to think Iggy knows he's getting a new house. As we were building it, we kept using the dresser as a size mechanism...checking to see if it will still fit on the dresser. YUP!! Iggy was getting excited...running to the corner of his current house, tilting his head, staring at us the whole time. Finally went up into his hammock and peered at us from above until he fell asleep..didn't have the heart to tell him it won't be finished tonight...lol
But it will be finished soon enough and then he can work on the "furniture" as I call it.
Will post pics when finished.

That sounds terrific. I'm sure Iggy will love it.

We can do pics...lol
He had a brainstorm today while at JoAnne's fabric...Vinyl?? Is it possible to make an enclosure of this stuff? (it was on clearance $1 a yard..picked up 13 yards..hope it's enough..lol)
Now he has me roped into sewing 'panels' for this enclosure which he'll tie to the main beams. His mind is making projects faster than he can finish the last one...

If the vinyl is heavy enough it will work. One of our members, Mar, makes cages with canvas. Just keep in mind how big the iguana is going to get.
And those sharp claws. If you can poke your own finger thru the material it probably isn't going to stand up.

That's what I originally went off in search of was the canvas, but they didn't have any this time around. I was gonna make 1 big cover like Mark does out of the vinyl and see how it holds up (pretty heavy gauge stuff).
I guess as Iggy gets bigger, I can always redo the covering if needed. Will have to enlarge the cage anyways as he grows (building it with small iguana in mind now but able to grow with him..sorta like a child's bed..start off with a crib and as the child grows, the bed grows with them to a twin size eventually).

LOL Don't build it with too small of an iguana in mind! Their growth rate will amaze you. In a years time you can have a 3-4ft long lizard on your hands. I swear I used to sit and just watch Zok get bigger!

Oh I know...he grows by a hour it seems..every week a new shed makes him a wee bit bigger. He's gonna love his new house.
The house is able to go up to 8ft tall/8ft wide eventually in time. Not now though as I read that bigger space makes it more vulnerable to him hurting himself. So as he grows, so will the cage. What we've built now is ALOT bigger than what he currently has so i'm sure he'll be happy and safe.

For future reference, try painter's canvas sold at a hardware store. You can get very large pieces for very little money!
