caging idea
Since my last tank some I made I have been rather unhappy with it and have since planned several designs for another and I think I have finally come up with one I like. I am having a hard time coming up with some of my ideas... i went and looked at materials and this tank is going to cost me about the same as the last one I built but be about twice the size.... all in vertical height... but it is also going to be 3 floors high. giving plenty of floor space and still the comfort of a lower ceiling. I would tell you how I plan on doing the background but I want to save my idea for when I get pictures and can show you all
Anyway I have already discussed in another thread about the sliding doors for the front and I now have that figured out but I am now on to other problems... I need to know if anyone has any suggestions on how best to make a mold I guess for the fibreglass bottom I plan on making so that all the water will slope to the middle, now that I think aboutr it it doesnt really have to even slope to the middle I will just need it so I have a low point.for a drain. Also if I do the base fiberglass, will it be able to adhere to the plywood I plan on making the rest of it out of easily? I was told it would but im not entirely sure of this persons opinion..... im planning on making the tank 3' tall 3 1/2' wide and 18" deep, not including my false bottom idea. Sorry if most of this isnt in a logical order but im having too much stuff run though my head at once, and I cant keep a straight thought and am now out of time.

Hello,
In the articles section of the HC network we have an article about the waterdragon palace. There is a section on how he added his pool with a drain. That may be of help. My idea/thought is why use fiberglass at all? Couldn't you purchase a premade "tub" and add a drain to it? If it were positioned at 2 degree slope to one corner, that would suffice as a means for it to drain. All you would need to seal it up is some silicone or plumbers putty. |

I had thought of that but I didnt have any idea of where I would go to find it at I had looked through but I havent found anything that would work except for those premade shower bottoms and they run at about 40 bucks or more and they are too big. and to fiberglass it is only going to run me about 15... if you could show me a specific product it would be appreciated

Hello,
How deep do you want this to be? At home depot there are "mixing tubs" you could use made from high density plastics. You also could choose from any rubbermaid or sterilite containers out there. They come in all shapes and sizes. Thats where I would start. |

Hello,
I agree Fran. I was thinking/assuming the drain would be a threaded 2 piece PVC unit. I know when installing wash basins in basements, we always just tossed some plumbers putty around the drain and tightened it from below creating a great seal. I personally like silicone myself, but thats how they always did it. ![]() |

Right. I just threw that into the pot because a lot of our members and visitors don't know what plumbers putty is and may end up trying to use a specialty item and expect it to perform where it won't. On the other end of the spectrum, silicone caulk will do all you want and more.
