sliding doors
I'm planning on building my next tank for ajaxx and I have the background planned out and materials already selected, the only problem I have is finding the window... i dont want to start makeing the rest of the tank until I have the window incase I cant find the size to fit the rest of it... so basically all my sizes are based on my window... im looking for one that is approximately 4 foot by 4 foot...
Where do you get the sliding front doors at? im not sure what they are called and I cant find them anywhere... so I was thinking if anyone knew what they were called I might be able to easily find them easier that way also. I looked at lowes... but all I saw was regular house windows... If you made your sliding glass window/doors for your tank how did you do it so that they will slide smoothly Any help much appreciated!

You can just buy sheets of glass at home depot or something and glue/screw down tracks for them to slide on. If they dont slide very easy just put tape on the bottom of the glass or throw a couple ball bearings on the track.

You can buy metal tracks like you see in showcases at hardware stores, I think. I'm considering building myself using the metal tracks, but was wondering if Plexiglas would work better than glass? I’m afraid of broken glass.

Plexiglass would work but you would need to get it very thick. Thin plexi can be knocked off track easily. I wouldnt worry too much about broken glass, its stronger than you think.

I had thought about that, but I was thinking about door handles to slide them back and forth and I wasnt sure how I would go about doing that with out cracking the glass and then the sharp edges... and is there specific tracks that I would have to use
I want them to be glass as plex scratches too easy and im not happy with how it is visually on my current custom tank.

No, any track should do although the metal ones would be a bit better than plastic.

We just buy a sheet of glass from the glaziers and then they cut it to size and smooth the edges (you are usually charged for this but my brither is an ex glazier lol).
As for the handles, most Do-It-Yourself stores should sell self adhesive handles for glass, or you could try eBay - they have loads of viv making stuff on there ![]() |
