Can you define "cooler"? What are some estimated temps? It really isn't safe for your iggy to be exposed to the cold for very long.

Hello and Welcome,

Iguanas are very curious and will flick their tongues at everything to investigate. And the tongue being sticky he will ingest it. I am not sure he would be able digest it and so it may get impacted in him. Also it being so dry it could cause dehydration if he is not drinking water and only getting water from the food he eats. That is why use of particle substrate is not recommended at all.

And also as Lacey has said cold is not good for the iguana. Iguanas require temperatures at the very minimum of 70 to be able to digest food. They should only stay at that temperature at night and then be allowed to warm up to their optimal temperature through a heat gradient. His basking area should be 92-98, the ambient or overall heat should be 80-85, with a cool spot of about 70-75, The ambient heat at nighttime should be about the same as the cool spot. They will thermoregulate (control their body temp) by moving from one zone to another. In that way they will reach their optimal temperature for digestion. Iguanas need heat to produce D3 (which is critical in calcium absorption) and to digest their food. Without heat food would just rot in their stomachs and come out undigested. You should check the care sheets out on iguanas on the site. They will help you a great deal.

Hay is fine for warm blooded animals. It helps hold their body heat in and keeps them warm so it is used for bedding.
Reptiles have no such internal heat so the hay will make no difference in that regard. Also as Marie stated they WILL end up eating it and may become impacted.
