I have been looking around at different caging options, I have been on Ebay and they have PVC or Plastic frame with Screen covers. Any impute on the use of this type of cages? Are they better then aquariums? In the past I have always housed our critters in Aquariums has proper caging changed in 15 years? I guess I have a lot to catch up on....

The only thing that I personally have against PVC and screen is that they both get brittle. ESPECIALLY if in direct sunlight. I've worked with PVC since it was approved for plumbing in 1970. We always had to make sure that we rotated the PVC pipe because if it was in the sun for 1 yr. we had to throw it away.

A lot depends on what you are intending to house in them. Another thing about the screen covers is it makes it hard to control heat and humidity. Also if you are talking about the "Reptarium" type cages with the mesh cover that zips closed, it won't take a snake long to find out where that zipper ends and get out.

What are you keeping your iguana in?

I haven't used PVC yet, I've built my cages using wood, but i've been considering a pvc iguana cage because it is lightweight and affordable.

Hello, we are keeping our iguana in a wooden framed screened cage. It is a good size (At least good enough for a 4 foot iguana!)LOL

Yeah, it all depends on what you're keeping. Iguanas and chameleons do best in screen enclosures. Anything that needs a very large enclosure is going to need screen simply because you can't find an affordable glass enclosure of that size, much less move it anywhere.

How large is the enclosure? Many people think their enclosures are large enough when in fact they are not, so I just wanted to check.

The cage is 4' high, 6' long and 2' Wide. It has a piece of driftwood for climbing in it that is 7' from end to end. The cage is made out of a 2" x 4" frame structure with OSB board for the top and bottom and the sides are 1" x 2" (squares- mesh) rabbit cage wire. It was difficult to find plans for the suitable cage; I looked around the web and combined ideas. This was before we found out about all you wonderful people. I work at an alternative high school and this became the project of two students. Now the kids want to see Lizzy. Maybe in the spring.. The cage is big enough for Sean to climb inside and have Lizzy sit on his lap to be fed.

That is better than alot of people do (not on this site of course, only the best for our iggies!) I rescued a 4+ foot male ig from a 55 gallon tank, it was terrible, he couldn't even turn around!

Lizzy was an adoption (I guess you would call it that) his owner was shipped to Iraq and the owners mom couldn't take care of it any more. From estimates he should be around 12 years old. He was originally found when he dropped out of a tree on a man and "chased him". The dog patrol was called because an alligator was chasing him... The dog patrol contacted the local pet store and they couldn't keep him and he was then given to the last owner. They had him for 6 years.
Lizzy get a lot of freedom around here (supervised of course). One of his favorite spots to sit is on Sean dresser. He has become an avid watcher of XBox games. I'm going to be concerned when he starts playing.

I believe it is important to be involved with what you children are interested in. I'm lucky, as Sean's father will pitch in also when needed. The problem I see is how do you take vacations

You have to find a friend who isnt afraid of creepy-crawlies who will come reptile-sit for you. Luckly for me I take my vacations with friends and leave me sister here to watch my lizards! And incase my sister falls through I have a 2nd person linde up to take care of them too!
