Hello,
My iguana is 4.5 feet long and the dimensions of his current enclosure are 6 high, 4 long, 4 wide. That is fairly adequate. I would prefer to go larger, and will, but this is what the space in my apartment allows. (No expansions until I move.) The doors on the enclosure are on the front. It has the doors, made of plexi, and the 2 side walls. The back wall is made from protected compressed board. If you run a search on the site for "Buddy", pictures of his enclosure are on the site. His enclosure is from Cages By Design, and came with him when I took him in. |

I would ditch the wire completely. It will make it very hard to control heat and humidity. Also depending on the type of wire it can cut off their toes. My Zok is 4 ft. Her cage has a double plexiglass door and the rest is enclosed by wood. a couple of vents in the top of one side and the bottom of the other will provide ventilation. I would also put in a small trap door in the bottom of the front. this will allow access to the food and water should it be necessary for a non-iguana-savy person to feed and water without having to deal with the lizard. In the event that the ig is a male that gets aggressive during breeding season it will also allow you to safely service the cage.

How big is he measuring from nose to vent? Have you checked out our caresheet? What are you feeding him and do you have a UVB light?

A couple of things you might consider. Raise the height of the cage to 6ft. Igs like height and it will give it a lot more room. The vertical space above the cage might as well be used. If you design the cage to be assembled in panels and bolted together when the time comes to enlarge you will already have the front and back panels including the door. This will leave you only having to add the larger sides, top and bottom. It'll save you some money when you rebuild the cage. It will enable you to easily disassemble the cage if you need to move it.
Also since you are having to buy lighting from scratch, check out the Reptile UV link on the home page. These are the current state of the art in reptile lighting and will be comparable in cost to the flourescent setup and will give you a lot more UVB.

I will add an amendment to what Merlin said. 6 feet tall is great for height but I find it is best to have it at least tall enough for you to fully stand up in (I've no clue how tall you are), and with a floor strong enough for you to stand on. Being able to fit within the cage makes it a lot easier to clean, arrange, get the ig out...
