styrofoam terrarium part 2
Here are some intresting websites on how to build a styrofoam terrarium. It's in german, but the pics are helpful!!Some of them are made out of wood, but the making is the same!

Thank you Jacky those pictures clarify a lot. I was thinking along the lines that the terrariums were constructed solely of styrofoam. I coulddn't figure out how you would hold them together. They have wooden frames.

Merlin, not all have wooden frames.Actually, most of them are just glued together with a special styrofoam glue, which is VERY strong!
Mine is completly build out of styrofoam, only the frame where the plastic things for the sliding doors come in,there I used a wooden frame to strengthen it. Look at www.chamaeleons.com/index.php?mode=styropor.This guy builds huge terrariums entirely out of styrofoam;look at the pictures very clearly;the only wood he uses is for the bottom of the big one!Even the legs are very thick styrofoam!I specially like the outside, which looks like real stone, but it's made of styrofoam. There are also a lot of German websites on how to make fake stone and nice backgrounds for terrariums, all made out of..yes,you guessed right, styrofoam!! This is fantastic material!I would recommend it to all of you to build your terrariums with it!! It costs VERY little;it's light weight;it's easy to build;it saves you up to 70% energy;it's ideal if you have a lot of reptiles, because it saves you loads of money! If you are intrested in building some, please check at your Do-It-Yourself store if they have that special glue for styrofoam, because it's the best!! If not,I have to send you some lol! Some people use silikon, but I don't know if it really will hold it together!! You have to try it first on small examples what works best for you! |

Jacky its a very interesting concept! And it would be nice for housing smaller animals. However unless the styrofoam you have there is considerably stronger than what we have I don't think I'd trust it to contain larger constrictors or large lizards like iguanas or monitors.

Merlin,if you can get styrofoam sheets with a thickness of 2" you can build great and big terrariums, trust me!! Hundreds of people are doing it over here, and are excited about it!!
For Iguanas I would use wood anyway, but for most snakes and lizards, spiders, frogs,Bearded Dragons.etc.it's just great! I need to send you my own pics to convince you,but please be patient;still haven't got that camera! Got to pay some other stuff first. |

Another thing: if you use wooden terrariums you can still glue some styrofoam sheets inside, on the wood, and this will save you energy cost, too! Even around all-glass tanks you can use it,but an all-glass tank is soo expensive and heavy!!

That is so cool! I am using a lot of styrofoam in the cage I am building for my soon to arrive Bearded Dragon. I am coating it with tile adhesive. Then a few layers of grout. One layer with tinted grout and paint for the color. One final coat of sealant, maybe a little sand and I hope to have realistic looking fake rocks! I am useing a wood frame, back, and base so it's not going to be all foam. I found three vinyl windows that I am going to use 24X24 in so I will not have to build something. It will also let me get to any corner. I'm loseing my train of thought now---so I'm going to bed! Night!
