as for the the pet store not selling repticarpet try your local homedepot or lowes or anything of the same and buy a cutting of indoor outdoor carpet if you buy a large cutting of it and do the math right you should be abe to have 4 or 5 pieces in which to rotate and like it was mentioned earlier even with washing eventually your gonna want to toss it the smell is inevitable

I found the Repticarpet, I got rid of all the repti bark and ended up keeping the Slate rocks on the one side since the Repticarpet only takes up 1/4 of the terrarium. Thanks for the suggestions.

Please don't use loose substrate!
I just lost my Lucy girl to impaction. She ate Lizard Litter and despite surgery and $2500 worth of vet bills later, she died last week. She was my baby!
It's not worth the heartache. In fact, I joined this site to see if others have had the same experience. We knew some products were dangerous; but, this one said SAFE! Stick with linoleum, large sheets of paper, or astroturf. Don't go through what we did. Good luck! |

Greetings Flamechick-
I am SO sorry to hear that you lost your girl to impaction, even after doing everything you could to save her. My thoughts and prayers are with you. It's a tragic end for any reptile. Your testimony here will save countless lives. Thank you for posting it. The substrate debate rages on year after year. It's so sad when we hear from people that prove our point- Particulate substrates are not "safe". No matter what the manufacturers AND pet stores say. We may be churning an old thread here, but I think it is so very important to get this message out to the people who have been entrusted with the life of a creature, again Thank you for posting about your loss. Lastly, welcome to the Herp Center Network of reptile sites. We are truly glad you chose to join and speak up about your loss! When you are up to it, we would very much appreciate you posting the details of your unfortunate situation. So many people will learn from it, and countless lives will be saved.

Sorry to hear of your loss also Flamechick. People will mention in the wild they have access to gravel, sand, dirt etc etc...but do we know exactly how long they survive in the wild? I am sure they get impacted there too and there are no vets to remove such impactions from them...they just wither away and die in the wild instead....I use newspaper for all my reptiles...cheap, absorbs well, and easy to clean....Lyn

Flamechick I too am sorry to hear your sad story as well. Maybe someone will read this and it will make an impression on them.
Unfortunately it happens all too often. Experienced keepers sometimes feel like we are beating our heads against a wall when we tell people that there is "NO SAFE, PARTICULATE SUBSTRATE FOR USE WITH IGUANAS!" only to be told that "the pet store guy said," or "the package said, it was ok to use." Often the only experience the pet store has with iguanas is to bring them in the back door and shove them out the front as quickly and cheaply as possible, while selling you as much stuff as possible in the process! And many products care nothing about the safety of the animals as long as they can part you with your money!
