cleaning the exoterra waterfall

I didn't know where else to put this so... its going here unless a mod knows where its really supposed to go and moves it

I haven't used my premade waterfall in months and decided to start using it again. the thing is I never emptied it and the water was old in there to begin with. How can I clean this short of boiling it or sticking it in the oven?

Right now after some scrubbing with hot water I have put some white vinegar and water and am letting that run for about an hour. Then I'm going to use some diluted rubbing alcohol and let that run for an hour. then let plain water run and keep changing that water till I'm somehow sure its safe.

Does that sound at all like it will work?

Another question is how do I keep the water safe and clean when the fall is in the actual tank?

Thanks for any help.

That sounds like it will work just fine Unless you are worried about transfer of germs between enclosures the alcohol probably won't be necessary and I seriously doubt you will develop Legionairre's disease. What exactly do you mean by keeping the water clean when it's in the actual tank?

Do I just keep adding fresh water to the waterfall or do I have to remove the entire thing every day to change all the water in it? Is what I meant, I think.

I'd change the water at the same time you give your animals fresh drinking water. Give it a quick rinse and a scrub it and should be fine.

I agree with MJ, if you stay on top of it a quick rinse once a week is usually fine, however if the animals use it for a potty spot I would clean it daily.
