Step-Dad Building a Tank, Got some questions
My step dad is building a tank for my Beardy Oynx. He is wondering what type of wood he should use and if he can stain it or varnish it, Current Plans are 6 Feet Tall, 4 Feet wide and 3 feet deep. Thanks in advance!
P.S. The back walls are gonna be wood and front will be a wire door or screen door... But donno what it should be. |

6' tall, though nice may not be very feasible and maybe a waste of space. Not too sure on the arboreal activities Bearded Dragons include. I would maybe build the enclosure 3-4' tall at most and I would make the most square footage with the base of the enclosure. 3Dx6L would rock.
I would probably make the front (Door) Plexi, build a base 4-5" tall and make another border 2" on the top. Screw a sheet of plexi onto the door frame and make the vents along the top of the glass. (How I built my Uro cage.) You can also use vents on each side of the enclosure to allow circulation. I don't have any pics so I drew this up for ya'. ![]() As for staining and the whole whatknot. You could do either or for the out side, staining probably the best for looks. If you aren't using great types of wood, for the inside, I would use a primer (Kilz 2) and then, in several layers, paint on a gloss or semi-gloss water base paint. This is probably the cheapest way and will cover your water proofing. I went with this. You can also use other methods for better types of wood such as polyurethane, Thompson's water proofing, ect. Most would take longer to cure and with the melamine you will have to seal the edges. Zane
