Question About Wood
Hey guys,
I've seen people mentioning that pine can't be used in an enclosure for a lizard. Is this true, or does it make any difference if I seal it? Also, on an slightly unrelated topic, if I use plexi-glass for a Blue Tongue Skink enclosure, will it get badly scratched? Thanks! |

Re: Question About Wood
How do you want to use the wood? Are you wanting to build the enclosure with it? Are you wanting to use it to build hides and other things for inside the cage? Is it a piece cut from a tree that you want to use?
Yes the plexiglass will get scratched fairly easy. If they like to dig and claw at the cage now, it won't take them long to scratch it up. I suggest using real glass instead.

Re: Question About Wood
sorry should have been a bit more specific....I want to build the enclosure out of it theres a place near me that sells large sheets of solid pine which are quite cheap
I thought it would look nicer than just plywood......if there are better types of wood to use I'd like to know |

Re: Question About Wood
Pine is fine,....
er sorry about that ! ![]() Large sheets of solid pine? How large? Are you talking about the chipboard that is basically sawdust and wood chips glued together? Any moisture and that stuff falls apart! You will have to seal any wood you use regardless of the type. Just stay away from pressure treated wood like is used for decks. I use cabinet grade plywood. Its a little higher but it is already sanded well so that takes a lot of the work out of it.

Re: Question About Wood
Well the one they mentioned when I phoned was 8 foot by 4 foot and a few different thicknesses
they said it wasn't the layered stuff but I won't know until I get a chance to go out there myself they just said solid sheet of wood. |

Re: Question About Wood
It's either veneered particle board or plywood. As Merlin said use the plywood.
You can't buy solid wood in 4 x 8 sheets. Glass will be cheaper than the plexiglass.

Re: Question About Wood
And even IF they had access to pine trees big enough to produce wood panels that size,....you couldn't afford it!
I suspect that its sections glued together.
