Caged Frustration

With the exception of the base, I am back to square one. The angles of this old house are making it virtually impossible for me to get the viv the required dimensions AND get it out of the house if needed. The top half is, once again, disassembled.

My only resource now is to build a "temporary" enclosure. 3' long x 4' high x 2' deep. Sitting on the base, Drago will still have the perception of being 6' in the air. As soon as I get a permanant place of my own, I will have to build a new enclosure to the proper dimensions.

Re: Caged Frustration

Or you could always build it with the idea of it being able to be disassembled.
Using bolts and nuts build it as individual panels and then bolt it together.

Re: Caged Frustration

Thought of doing that but how do I seal the panels that will be taken apart to keep the moisture from getting in between them?

Re: Caged Frustration

If I build two sections with the above dimensions...I could slide them together. If I silicone seal the "seam", will I be able to cut it off with a knife when I have to move it?

Re: Caged Frustration

i would say figure out what your maximum dimension can be, and go from there.

ALso, what if you did do it in 2 sections. and then make the top parts insides fit into the bottom part? Sort of an overlapping kind of thing. Water drips down. Just make sure you seal the wood well.

Re: Caged Frustration

If I polyacrylic all of the wood....Would I necessarily have to "seal" the seams with silicone?

Re: Caged Frustration

i don't think you would need to really. As long as you get a good coat of it on the edges.

Re: Caged Frustration

If you build the floor up with a bit of a lip around the edge in case of a water spill you could probably do without the silicon. As long as all the wood was sealed well.

When I built my boa cage I polycryliced the whole thing and then ran a bead of silicone around the bottom seams just to make sure nothing dripped out.
When a 6 ft boa lets go it can get rather messy!

Re: Caged Frustration

Gonna draw out your idea tonite Liz. I know I am safe with my base measurements because I got that upstairs from the basement...so I know that it will be able to go out the back door. That was 2x2x6. If I build 2 more sections identical to that, I know I would be able to "stack" them. They make stainless steel hardware, to prohibit rusting, to brace the sections together. Any seams can be covered with trim that has been sealed, for cosmetic purposes and easily removed when it is time for me to have to move it.

My family & friends outside the "reptile world" think I am nuts for going through all of this for the dragons...they just don't understand. Glad you guys are here and thanks for all of your help and support! Hugzzz!

Re: Caged Frustration

You can use weather stripping on any joints and have bolts tighten them together. That'll keep humidity/heat in. As for sealing the bottom, you can do what I did. I got pond liner and used it to line the bottom. And I used that because it was actually going to hold water. If you have a plastic container inside for water you can probably get away with sealing the wood well and keeping a towel around it to soak up any splashes.
