Outdoor snake jungle gym

I am interested in building a snake rack but I need it to be portable for the shower (right now I use a step ladder) and I want to take it outside so she can get the sun without crawling in the grass. Supervised, of course.

Re: Snake Rack Help

Heres a link to a good site with tips on building different enclosures and racks.
Herpers toolbox

Kcftlaud, Are you looking to house just your Boa, Racks are really meant for more then one snake.
You would be better off with something like the stackable enclosures shown in the link provided.
As for portable, your going to have a tough time building any cage that is portable, but you could build a nice wood enclosure for inside, then a seperate enclosure out of hardware cloth/screen outside.
By, portable for the shower? Do you mean washing the enclosure in a shower?

Re: Snake Rack Help

Actually, I meant like a jungle gym for her. She loves to be outside and I don't want her in the grass if I can help it. I am not worried about pesticides but fire ants and other things are in the grass as well. I just want to make a portable play area for her. I like to keep her in the bathroom when I am cleaning her enclosure but I don't think that offers her enough stimuli. I know, I'm an obbessive frealk, but so far all three human children have survived! LOL

Re: Outdoor snake jungle gym

Just so you realize that just putting the boa on the jungle gym does not mean that she will stay up there. When you get them out in the warm sunshine they become very active! The same couch potato snake that will basically hang out where you put them indoors will become a lot more adventuresome and could easily get into trouble.

Re: Outdoor snake jungle gym

how about building something for her that's outside, and then something else inside?

Re: Outdoor snake jungle gym

You can build a nice, safe, outside pen. Just a wooden frame, with 1/4" to 1/2" Hardware cloth screen attatched to it.
Cover the top, and all sides, then just build some type of locking door, throw some clean branches in there, or even attatch some branches together to make a tree, just like a large bird post you'd buy at a petstore.

Re: Outdoor snake jungle gym

Actually, that's a good idea, Ryan. Roxy is funny. When we are inside she is always going up. When we are outside she wants to be down. I would never leave her unattended, unless she was in her own enclosure in my room. I'll have to think about it some more. I am redoing the backyard anyway for summer so maybe I can work in an area for her. Then she can hang out with the rest of family when we are swimming or Bar-B-Queing. There is nothing like natural heat and Florida is ripe for that!

Re: Outdoor snake jungle gym

I usualy watch my boa like a hawk when i have her outside, but whenever i give her a bit more freedom and let her down, she is usualy content to stretch out in the tall grass, head up checking everything out.

She also has a spot in the yard where i have "isolated" A big branch, coming off a tree she can climb on it, stretch out, but the only way she can go anywhere else is by going back down the branch to the tree.
Granted i still have to watch her closely, but it gives me that second to grab her if she decides she sees a tasty bird higher in the trees, or wants to try some adventuring on the ground.

Granted, you all get a bit more warm weather down there then we do up here.

Re: Outdoor snake jungle gym

I do watch her like a hawk also when she is outside. I hover in case she gets rambuctious. I'm going to do an isolated area per Ryan. That is probably my best bet. If I gave her some time to settle she just might enjoy the warmth. Merlin, sorry, I can't resist the shot-I understand the couch potato theory, I was married for 12 years to one of the same species!!!! My bad! Sorry.

Re: Outdoor snake jungle gym

i've often let mine out in the summer for some fresh air and sun too. but if i ever put him in the grass i won't let go of him completely though. will usually hang onto his tail as he explores the grass so he can't into trouble (like vanishing down into a mole hole in a split second).
