Re: Help Building a Bluey Tank

can you tell us about the habitat they need? Like temps and humidity and space? I don't know anything about keeping them so I wouldn't know where to begin in suggesting a setup.

Re: Help Building a Bluey Tank

Lacey would be a good one to ask. I know she had a breeding pair at one time. (At least I *think*...)

I hope you don't mind me saying this - and please understand it's only out of concern for the animals - but it seems like you're getting an awful lot of reptiles very quickly. And, well, without much research beforehand. Maybe that's not the case and it's just coming across that way to me. I'm just a little concerned because often when a person gets into keeping reptiles, they find it so captivating that they go get many of them, and then get in over their heads.

I'm sorry if that's not the case here. I really don't mean to offend. But if it does seem like you might be buying some of these impulsively, you'll really want to step back and take a hard look at what you have and what you can afford from here on out, and what you can handle as far as daily care. Usually it's a good idea to get one thing at a time, spend some time working with it and getting used to what needs to be done for it before buying another.

Re: Help Building a Bluey Tank

oh I completly understand your reasoning. i would say the same thing if I saw it. when ever I get an animal I do give it a week to set in a think about costs, care, special needs and anything else that comes with it. these animals are my life. they are the only things I spend money on, besides gas and the other nesesities of life. there have been animals that I have wanted to get but haven't gotten them because I knew I wouldn't be able to give them the proper care.

Re: Help Building a Bluey Tank

Blue Tongue Skink need floor space, and lots of it. And don't think that just because they have tiny little legs they wont climb, make sure you have a good lid.

a 40g breeder tank or larger would be best, a 55g tank doesn't have enough floor space for an adult.

Babies are really flighty, make sure you have lots of hides, I would recommend keeping the new guy on something like paper towels or carpet until you have a clean bill of health, I totally trust Zach, but still get a fecal test run just incase.

After my guys were out of quarantine they went on to aspen, one of them loved it, the other hated it. I'd recommend potty training before putting them on aspen though because its hard to keep clean, with their low little bodies they tend to walk through their messes and their food and everything and poop paint the entire cage forcing frequent substrate changes.

Good luck and memorize the caresheet from Blue Tongue Skink.net, it's a good one.

Re: Help Building a Bluey Tank

yes Blue Tongue Skink.net has been such a blessing for me. i have never seen a care sheet like theirs for any animal.

yes how do you potty train? are you talking about when you get them on a schedule and you know when they poop and you just take them out side?

i didn't want to buy a tank I wanted to build one. roughly 4'x2'x2'. i've just had no experince building something like this. i just feel my skink would be much happier in a habbitat taylor made to his needs =]

Re: Help Building a Bluey Tank

I potty trained them just like I did my Bearded Dragon and iguana. First thing in the morning before they got breakfast they all got thown in the bathtub (separately of course!) Its time consuming, but cleaning substrate daily is harder than disinfecting a bath tub.

Custom made is a great idea, mine was custom built.

I always wanted to do a 'table top' type design like people do for torts, but I never had the room.
