Re: A Few Quick Questions!

I think my biggest problem if I build this enclosure will be the glass. If I go with the second design there, and I only have one door i'll need a piece of glass 2'8"x5'2". A rather large piece of glass. I thought about having two doors, 2'6" wide, but I really don't want to break up the front of the glass with the bars going down the center.
I am really leaning towards the wood enclosure more though. Haha, now I may end up with a empty 55 and an empty 75 gallon tank. lol. Maybe i'll put the schneider Skink in the 55, bet he'd love that...
I think i'll take a trip to home depot to price check everything, and see about how much this is gonna cost. Kinda depends if I can really spend the amount, worst case scenario I know I can build a lid, and latch and hinge it to the 75. I would like to give her the extra space with the custom enclosure though.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

If you make the doors sliding ones you won't have too much of a visual barrier.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

That is a good idea, but I'm not really sure how to go about that with real glass and no doorframe, and im not sure how well one without a doorframe would work.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

I'm talking about sliding door track which is commonly used for display cabinets. There are varying costs levels of the product. Ranging from $10 to hundreds.
With two grooves the glass slides one in front of the other. It works very well.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

ahh, something i'll have to look into, does somewhat depend on price though, Hopefully i'll get a chance to stop by home depot this weekend and price everything. Along with finding a realible glass cutter.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

I wouldn't recommend cutting any glass yourself that's over an 1/8". You'll be wanting 1/4". It's quite difficult to cut it at that thickness. I've had to do it at work several times and it never turns out too well. I would just get it cut at Home Depot. For the track just ask them for plastic U-channel sliding glass track. I'm currently installing some myself in an enclosure.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

THe sliding glass is very nice, it will make life much simpler. The snake should not be able o get out, and the cage will not have the two door look.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

Although I have never had Home Depot cut glass I have had them cut wood and they aren't the best with precision cuts.
I would suggest that you talk to a glass speciallty shop. They may be able to do a much more precise cut.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

Yes a very good idea Merlin. The more accurate the better or it won't be easy to get in and out.

Re: A Few Quick Questions!

I know there is a large glass place on Sulphur Spring road right there at 695 and rt. 1

I don't know what their prices are like but it is a HUGE place, and the quality is pretty good.
