Question on foam background
for my whites permanent tank I have a 75 gallon tank. i've read on here that you should put silicone on the glass first, the great stuff sticks to that but not to glass. i've also read somewhere that it's next to impossible to remove. i saw on another site a guy cut eggcrate to the exact size of the back of the tank and put the great stuff on that. my questions are:
1.how would that be attached to the back of the tank? 2.what is the best tool you have found to cut eggcrate? 3.would mold become a problem behind the background? if so what do I do? 4.whats the best way to cut the great stuff, with a heated knife ? 5. can you paint great stuff? if so what kind of paint? 6.once inside the tank can I add more great stuff against the glass, and it wouldn't stick? i'll try to post a link to that other guys sight as soon as I find it again and someone shows me how . thanks everyone, big fred |

Re: Question on foam background
The links good but alot more work than is needed to make a nice natural tank. I would start by using styropor sheets in the thickness you would like and then add a rock face using stacked pieces (this can be held in place with silicone). Use a heat gun or hot knife to shape your "rocks" and to add detail. Than coat with a epoxy you can add pigment powder to this if you like and flock with a substrate ie; sand, soil, small rock. This will save you alot of time and money.
Styropor sheets are dirt cheap and last a lifetime when coated in epoxy. If it fits in the cage well you may or may not want to use a bit of silicone to hold the background in. Heres a pair pictures of one I've done.

Re: Question on foam background
here are a few photos of my 90 gallon construction. Hopefully they will give you some ideas. Remember, tree frogs like height rather than length. If you have a 75 gallon long, i can help you do a vertical conversion for it. Its not that difficult.
Here is the thread documenting my construction. Dumpy treefrog vivarium construction ![]()

Re: Question on foam background
liz, i was hoping you'd chime in. i do have a stand that came with the tank so inverting the tank is not an option i'd like to pursue. the tank is 21" high
(outside measurement) X 4' long X18" deep. if this is truly detrimental to whites health than I could either trade or sell the tank, or find a different species to house in there. but I really like the whites, actually lookin for some blue phased whites. i've seen your tank on some threads here and another forum that is now down for maintenance (over a week, whats up with that?). you've gotta be proud of the work you did on that, very impressive, as well as the pink hair !!and I did want to have a couple water falls in there with a stream leading one to the other with a pond in the middle. whadya think? i really value your input as well as others on this forum ,as I saw one poster refer to you as the frog queen I would have to agree!!! |

Re: Question on foam background
OMG tell me about the maintenance on the other site!!!
you don't HAVE to do a vertical conversion. 21 inches is a good height for them. I think the stream and pond idea are great, just be sure you have a good filter and good access to the filter. As I find with both my whites and my firebelly toads, they track in lots of coco-husk which requires lots of cleaning out the water. Plus, the whites like to "do their business" lots of times in the water.

Re: Question on foam background
cool a quick reply!! as far as the coco husk goes , i read on one post directed to you that you can use organic soil instead for the substrate. haven't seen that at walmart.what type/brand filter would you recommend? also that 21" height would probably turn to 18" or 17" after the false bottom is installed, which i'm still researching. also, i read, i think, you use walmart brand spring water. how do you get the hard water stains off the glass?

Re: Question on foam background
1. I have organic potting soil, with an inch or two of coco-husk on top. I had to go to a specialty garden center to find it.
2. 17" is probably OK. The frogs I adopted came from a 29 gallon. They will find spaces. 3. spring water got expensive. I switched to a chemical dechlorinator found in any petstore fish section. A few drops per gallon and you have good tapwater. 4. As for a filter, I really like Aqua Clear filters. I have them for all my fish tanks. I don't have a filter for the whites, since I have bowls instead. 5. You could try scraping the water stains off with a paint razor scraper. Have you tried vinegar?
