New Issues With Construction
Apparently you can't just drill through glass..
Apparently you can't drill at all through tempered glass ( what the bottom of most fish tanks are made from ) So now I have to redesign my piping... Luckily Thad Zeigler Glass will drill the holes for $5.00 each, however they told me quickly they're not responsible if my glass breaks. ![]() ![]() |

Re: New issues with construction
You can drill through glass with a diamond bit. However you need to use oil or water to keep the bit from getting too hot.

Re: New issues with construction
what Mike said. You can do it, its just tricky.
I'm glad you got someone to cut it and I think the only thing you would have to worry about, is if you filled the entire thing up with water, which I don't think you are doing.

Re: New issues with construction
normal glass can be drilled. just takes a lot of patience. do it slow and let the bit do the cutting, don't apply pressure. as for tempered glass, although it can be drilled (i've heard of a few that were able to do it, but still failed alot), takes exponentially more time, patience, and care.
you could always drill the back or side of the tank near the bottom and use a 90 degree elbow to point the pipes up again.

Re: New issues with construction
I'm sure they'll cover their butts by saying they're not responsible but they'll have a much better chance of pulling it off than anyone else. Definately worth $5 to get it right.

Re: New issues with construction
Yeah, I believe I'm going to take it to them. But jeez, this is a $300 fishtank... if it breaks my girl will killllllll me. And I wondered, why do they only charge $5 to do something so difficult? Do they break often or what?
Tempered glass has an 80-90% break rate. LoL, yeah, we're not trying that. |

Re: New issues with construction
Like stated they're just covering their butts. If they do happen to break it you can replace the bottom no problem.

Re: New issues with construction
I"m guessing they are a glass shop. If it does happen to break, buy a new piece from them and have them drill it. Take it home and with some aquarium sealant it can be as good as new, and that's IF there is a problem

Re: New issues with construction
Yeah, I'm going to not risk breaking the bottom, but the back yes. I'm going to have them drill it and I'll use an elbow pipe to direct it to my canister filter. Now if only I could get my Herpacrete, viv mortar, come on HerpInvert...

Re: New issues with construction
Hey guys and gals, about this Habacrete mortar, is this stuff waterproof? Has anyone tried it yet? I'm in the middle of building my cage and the cement sealer I have seems to be leaking slightly. It's Xypex high and dry concrete waterproofer. It's supposed to absorb into the pores of the cement and crystalize to permanently seal it. I guess I applied it wrong or something. Anyways, since I can't seem to figure that out I need something a little easier. I might just go for the epoxy but I'd love something that you just apply and let dry......maybe paint or color after. Wouldn't that be lovely?
