Re: cages?

I moved your thread over here to the Herp Habitats section.
A few questions before I can help you out.
Where will these enclosures be going?
What size are you thinking off making them?
The best material would be 3/4 plywood, as both enclosures will need to be fairly large.

Re: cages?

both of these cages will be in my basement so I will have enough room for both of the cages. i want the cage for the tree monitors as tall as possible probably to the ceiling and the niles fairly wide. I dont know how wide I should make it thats why I came here first

Re: cages?

Here's some pics of a couple Black Tree enclosures. They are 4 ft w x 3 ft d x 7 ft h

If you can go 8 ft high I would. They will definitely use it.

Re: cages?

For your Nile. I'm not sure how old it is but as an adult you'll need an enclosure around 10 ft long x 5 ft deep. Height isn't a major issue but 5 or 6 ft would be something to aim for. Many monitors not considered Tree dwellers will still use available height. You'll also need a good size pool in there as well.

Re: cages?

The best thing for Trees is to cover the sides as much as possible with bark or lattice. The more secure they are the healthier they'll be.

Re: cages?

And when you build a pool do you add a plug so it can be drained?

Re: cages?

Definitely a time saving feature. Makes it easy to flush it out with a basin below that is removeable. Takes a little more work to figure it out for an indoor enclosure than an outdoor one. An outdoor one you can simply dig a hole below to hold enough of the runoff until it drains away. An inside enclosure you'd need to elevate the floor enough to at least get a low level basin under to catch the draining water. Elevating the floor means supporting it with 2 x 4 since the enclosure is going to be pretty heavy from the dirt and what not.
