I can't speak from experience, but both my husband and I thought that pieces of cut up sponge (as long as they don't have any chemicals on them) would work just as well as moss if it were kept moist -- not soaking wet.
That's what we were planning on trying for our snakes.

Hello,
Sponges are notorious for carrying and holding bacteria. They are basically a breeding ground for harmful bacterias. A majority of the sponges sold today are sold with chemical agents within them to help stop and eliminate the possibility of bacterial growth.(As well as cleaning agents.) Seeing as you can't use a sponge that carries these chemical agents, I would fear that a bacterial build up would be inevitable.
I have personally never used sponges for this reason and have found sphagnum moss to be one of the best mediums available. Naturally, sphagnum moss has the ability to prevent mold and bacterial build ups. (I don't know why I am afraid.)
The sphagnum moss that I prefer is the stranded material. I avoid the ground up sphagnum moss.
I have been using sphagnum moss for several years now with my Leopard Geckos and it has worked wonderfully.

Hello,
I have no experience with bed a beast so I can't endorse or criticize the product. If you are seeking a short term fix while you wait to get some sphagnum moss, paper towels can be used.
Seeing as I don't know your situation, Home Depot carries sphagnum moss. It is approximately $2.99 for a bag of it. (The bag lasts forever it seems!)

Thanks for the heads-up on the sponge idea Rich! We've been using sphagnum moss and it's been great, but we just had the idea that a sponge might work just as well.
I guess we'll stick with the moss!

Something else that's worked for me, are human breast pads for breast feeding moms. They are disposeable and they hold moisture really well. I'm sure you can get them at any drug store. I'm not joking I really have used them! Lol!
