Stupid question???
Ok so, I am getting my new snake tomorrow and I changed my mind on his cage. Instead of a terrarium I got a fairly large, shallow, clear rubbermaid bin that cost me a whole 10 dollars. I figured it would be better to save the money and wait for when he is bigger to splurge on an enclosure. Now my problem is....I drilled many air holes into it but I am not sure how many is enough...hahaha. I obviously want him to be able to breathe but Im just not sure....if it were me living in there I think I would want to have a constant air flow. Can someone help me out? I have since drilled more holes into it (a little bigger) and the lid has alot too.

Are you going to be happy with this enclosure? You could get a 20 gal tank for not much more than that. You would be able to see your snake a lot better than the plastic bin.

What I do with mine is a 2 lines of 1/4 inch holes about 1 inch apart with the second line about 3/4 below the first and staggered.
a pattern like this o-----o----o----o ---o-----o----o One thing I would recommend is to attach a peice of velcro on the center of the long sides that secures the top to the pan. A lot of these tubs have a weak spot there that will allow the snake to squeeze through.

I'm getting the Mexi Black today.....just a baby. I live in a town where everything is expensive.....that 20 gallon terrarium is like $80. Yeah I will be happy with it for awhile. And that is a great idea with the velcro because I did notice that it was a little weak in the corners actually. I made my holes about 1/5th of an inch in that same pattern that you suggested Merlin. I think I am going to get a heat pad because I can see a heat lamp getting way too hot for that thing. Anyway....I will post the pics later on today....yay!!! Thank you guys for the imput....

I use a heating pad system myself. For a snake as small as you are getting I would be very careful. They can wiggle through the smallest of holes. If that snake can get its head through, its out of there!

Ok the big moment has arrived....I got my Mexi Black King and he is currently roaming around his new home, checking everything out (probably looking for ways to escape haha). I managed to get one picture of him and its not very good but here goes....
He is right in the middle of a shed at the moment so he's really dull but he is very curious and gentle so far.... I picked up a small heat pad, an Exo Terra red heat glow bulb (50 watts) and a night glow heat bulb (also 50 watts). So he should be good for now. Everything is set up and he looks great in there....I will get a better pic when he is shed.... |

How do you intend to use the bulbs? You can't put them inside the tub or the snake may get burned and in the enclosed nature of the tub it will get too hot.
What is the ambient temperature of the room where the tub will be located? Unless its very cool the heat pad should be all you need. All I use with my colubrids is a heatpad under 1/3 of the tub.

I dont intend to use the heat bulbs until he moves into his bigger cage actually...and the temp in my house is always really warm (as my fiance puts it). Here are some more pics I just took of him......he is such a great little guy. Doesn't mind me at all. He needed to be fed today so I got him a pinky and wow was he famished....or at least he made it out to look like they never fed him....lol. I cant wait to see his new skin when he sheds............
