converting a turtle tak to a snake tank

my moms freind gave me a 30 long turtle tank, with the section cut out of the side for filter acess I think. can I seal a peice of plexiglass over the hole with silicone to make it safe for a snake? it doesnt have to hold water do I still need to use aqaurium sealant?

I would go with the aquarium sealant. You KNOW it will hold and its non toxic once cured!

maybe I am mistaken, but isn't aquarium sealant actually silicone?

i don't see why that wouldn't work for your snake, jade. have fun,

might be a different type of silicone? i dont know, i cut a peice of plexi glass to size so it fits up into the black lid liner like the glass shoud and fits the hole. i have it secured with duct tape for the moment ( i like duct tape it comes in handy) i think i'll get the aqaurium stuff just to be on the safe side they have it at a pet supply store not to far away

There is silicon and then there is aquarium sealer (silicon) regular household silicon is not safe for use with animals. Aquarium sealer is safe.

Yes aquarium sealer is silicone. However if you read the side panel on regular household type silicone it plainly states not for use in aquariums.

I guess my question is Why is it NOT RECOMMENDED for Aquariums??? Out gassing? won't hold up under water? WHY??

I have used I think GE SILICONE II for aqariums witll no ill results!

Sometimes I just think the company wants to sell you a higher priced niched product!!

actually, i think that all "silicon" is non-toxic. maybe some is more viscous than others?

i used automotive repair silicon to glue some rocks together for my lizards, and that was fine.

i dunno, it is an enigma indeed. perhaps a topic for an experiment?

GE II silicone is safe for aquarium applications. It comes in clear, black, grey, and brown. It has been speculated that "NOT FOR USE ON AQUARIUMS" was forced on the label by the corporate lawyers to keep some prized fish keepers from suing. I believe the GE I is used for kitchen and bathrooms and contains mold inhibitors, these are the enemy. And GE II should definately be able to hold the weight of water in a tank that size, since there is no water it should definately work.

DAP does sell a 100% silicone aquarium sealant, its about the same price as the large tubes of GE II but a little smaller. When sealing tanks the DAP is my first choice, its consistent and easy to work with, I use GE II for everything else.

After a trip to lowes today I wanted to edit something in....

The GE II silicone that is safe is ONLY THE WINDOW AND DOOR, the kitchen and bath contain mold inhibitors, and as stated above these are the enemy. I just wanted to make sure no one gets more confused
