We Are back - Our Local Corner Rainforest
Been a while since I have been around on here, had some other things monopolozing my time, namely work and the pearson ariel. But here is the begginings the newest home for some yet to add critters, Thinking a U. Phantasticus and maybe a few frogs.
Pic #1 - Shows the corner "TV" stand pruchased for a local store "Just Cabinets" came unfinished some Red Mahogany Stain and a few coats of varnish and wala, the pink stuff in the bottom is styrafoam, shaved with a taper to facilitate draining.
Pic #2 - Here's the 6 inch Epi-glass tape being precut, around the corners it thickened epoxy (West Sys and colidal silica) to make a filet and help seal up the gaps.
Pic #3 - Glass all wetout and laid in place
Pic #4 - More detail of above
Pic #5 - to make room for this monster the "bookcase" has been condensed from 2 - 5 shelve units to 1 - 10 shelf unit.
Pic #6 - Here's it home, the grey coating on the inside it West sys epoxy with barriercoat additive, to help prevent seepage into the surrounding wood.
Pic #7 - Over kill probably, but here it actuallly the 2nd layer of rocks, larger ones below, followed by screen, then pea gravel, then layer of screen then potting soil. In the bottom you can see the ultrasonic humidifier.
Pic #8 - showing the "ducting" for the humidifier.
Under the rocks is a drain, I forgot the pictures, the drain and the duct are glued in with 3m 5200

Here is one with the soil and the plants to be placed, still waiting on the treefern pannels for the walls, and need some hard scaping. Hoping to have to in place for the next Reptile show here in HdG (Oct 7), so we can pick up the fauna for it, having a monthly show is nice.

Looks great so far. Keep us updated. There's no such thing as overkill in building a terrarium as far as I'm concerned. It's better to go that extra step.

Looks good! A nice large peice of driftwood would make a perfect centerpeice. I like tree fern panels but they need lots and lots of plants on them for it not to take away from the tank. How much lighting you running?

The Light situation was a big "HUH???" I hve read for days and there sees to be no clear answer. Yesterday I purchased a 36" twin bulb T-5 unitwith one 6700K and one 10000K bulbs. (any advise here is appriciated)
Jody went down to the marina yesterday and picked us up some driftwood specimines, but nothing matches what I want exactly. Thinking about setting it up like the base of a tree trunk. Well see I guess.
I also picked up a nice rock that I envisioned would maked a nice moss covered cave, there was a void on the top that fit a nice Jewel orchid.

Ahh the lighting question. There is no 'magic bullet' when it comes to lighting. Everyones' setup varies just enough that some people get away with copious amounts of lighting while others can barry run fluro tubes.
The T-5's are a good choice. The ballast and bulb is what it really comes down to, especially with these. Either way you will have enough light but you definately want enough bang for your buck. They have a built in reflector and smaller diameter than regular fluros which makes them much more intense. I run mostly compact fluro's due to lack of space but if I was running anything that could fit VHO fluroescents I would....Hope I didn't loose you in there
Have you ever considered building a tree from epoxy?
