Flying Geckos
Hey everyone. I'm looking for information on the flying gecko (Ptychozoon sp). The caresheets I have read say that they don't really need a basking area just an Under Tank Heater and a full spectrum light for the plants to grow. The temps being kept in the low 80's during the day and the low-mid 70's at night. If anyone can give me some good caresheets that would be great. Maybe someone on here that owns them would be willing to chat with me? Sexing info would be nice too, i want to house two of them in a 15 gallon tall tank and I don't want to accidently get two males. Under Tank Heater placement has also got me stumped. Every source says differently. Is it better to have it placed on the side or back of the vivarium or under it for these guys?
Thanks,

Thanks deltro star, i appreciate all of those links. I have plenty of reading to do AND I have plenty of work to do now. I just found out that yet again there will be no help from mom on this one. I'll have to get the money myself. Wish me luck on these job applications! lol

I'd get something larger than a 15 gallon if you want 2 of them. Sexing is much like other geckos. Males have llarger femoral pores than the females do. I had a female years ago, they're really cool gex, but also very fragile, so they're best just for viewing.

well I knew going into this that they wouldn't be very good to handle. I just want them as a display animal. Are you sure that a 15 gallon wouldn't be big enough for two? One of the care sheets I read said that they don't really need a basking area, just light for the plants and an Under Tank Heater either on the side of the tank or under it. As long as the temps are ok. If you've got any more info or want to chat i'd love it.

Well, its been a long time since I looked anything up on flyers, or since I've owned one, but from what I'm finding the minimum for a breeding pair is considered 10 gallons. I guess its just me though. For a gecko that size I personally wouldn't go any smaller than 20 gals. Just to provide a decent temperature gradient and allow each animal their own space. My internet's down, I'm on a friend's computer right now, but when I get internet back you can IM me with yahoo, MSN, or AIM anytime. My screen names are in my sig and profile. I'm not sure what I can offer that caresheets and websites haven't already, but I'm usually around once I'm off duty, so feel free to message me.

That's what stumped me. That the minimum space for a pair was a 10 gal. I would NEVER put two eight inch animals together in a space as small as a 10 gal regardless of what it was. The 15 gallon I have is very tall and also has a decent amount of floor space. The local shop has agreed to order me in a pair for 40 dollars once I get everything set up. the main thing was that they don't need a basking area, only an Under Tank Heater and a regular aquarium light for the plants. Once I read that I knew that this was what I wanted to add to my collection.

Yeah, being nocturnal, they don't bask. I'd put the Under Tank Heater on the sie of the tank, since they are arboreal. Make sure there's something leaning up against the wall so they can hide in the dark while they soak up heat. Floor space is less important than height for these guys, since they like to spend most of their time off the ground.
