I Got a Rescued 1 1/2 Inch House Gecko...

As stated, i have a small house gecko that was living on my girl friends grandmas plant. Her grandma spends her winters in florida and came back to new york (where i live) for the spring. The gecko was in a habitat that was too cold and iv rescued it. I got the temperture correct for night and day and hes been eating crickets regularly and iv powdered them with calcium. Iv kept humidity up also.... so so far things look all good but this is my first reptile so any suggestions???

Welcome to the neighborhood! If you want us to be able to give suggestions we need more information. What is your setup like? What size tank? What substrate are you using? What are the actual temperatures? What is the humidity at? ect...

welcome to the board. What Shell said, and if you can post a photo of the habitat, please do.

One thing with the calcium, its easy to over-do it. Once a week is fine.

Re: I Got a Rescued 1 1/2 Inch House Gecko...

well i got the day temp at 88 to 85 with an incandescant bulb. i keep the humidity from 55 to 70 percent. at night i have a red bulb that keeps the temp around 70 or 69. my substrate is repti-bark. it seems to be cedar. the tank is around 2 gallons, small but so his he. (too small?) inside i got a coconut-half hut that was cheap a few driftwood pieces he basks on, a real plant from petco and some fake leaves. i only bought the the things in the tank, the lights werejust lyin around. i dont got much dough. crickets are cheap down the street at a pet store tho.

Re: I Got a Rescued 1 1/2 Inch House Gecko...

everything is great but the repti bark. There is a chance he can swallow it (although at his little size probably not). But if you want to be on the ultra safe side, go to the pet store, and get a compressed brick of shredded coconut husk ($6). With your little tank that should last you a long time once you expand it.

If you can at some point. Upgrade to a 10 gallon. Your temps seem good, but its hard to get a temperature gradient in a tank so small. Meaning if your little guy wants to cool off, there is no where to go.

Join a freecycle group. Yahoo has a good one. So far I have gotten 2 free 10 gallon tanks over the past 3 months.

Can someone chime in if they need UVB?

Re: I Got a Rescued 1 1/2 Inch House Gecko...

i'd probaly try a lower wattage lightbulb, I usualy try to keep 40 watt, 60 watt, and 75 watt bulbs lying around specificaly for my herps, no running around deciding what light i dont use in the house if one burns out, or gets too hot or too cool.
