Re: Are These Juvenile Mediterranean House Geckos?

there's the best picture i had...
there's two of my four geckos in the pic, one's on the rock and one's in the food dish with the meal worms.

i'm gonna try to edit the picture more, but i figured i'd go ahead and put up the pic now, incase it's okay enough.

Re: Are These Juvenile Mediterranean House Geckos?

They do look an awful lot like juvenile Mediterranean house geckos, but it's also kind of hard to tell from the picture. Do they look like this:

Those are juveniles, and this is an adult:

Keep in mind the lightness or darkness of the geckos can depend on the time of day, amount of light, and just the individual variations in color.

Keeping Mediterranean house geckos is very similar to keeping green or brown anoles, only they're nocturnal and often prefer the walls of the enclosure. Being nocturnal means they also don't require UVB light like anoles do.

Re: Are These Juvenile Mediterranean House Geckos?

okay thank you sosososososoossoosooooooo much!!!
that's like, exactly what they look like.
they're babies, i'm sure. they're really small.
they are sooo cute!!

they finally ate today.
i'd been trying to feed them meal worms, cause thats all we had.
we have them for our turtle.
anyways, they didnt eat them, and by the time i realized they werent gonna get eaten, the pet store was closed, so i had to wait til the next day.
when i got there, they were out of small crickets.
so i had to wait until today.
but i got crickets and i think they all ate at least one.
i also put a cube of cricket food in there so that the crickets wouldnt bite the geckos.
that happened to our leopard gecko, and it abcessed [[idk how to spell that..]]
he ended up dying from it, so i really dont want it to happen again.
cricket food wont hurt the geckos, will it?

i dont really know how to take care of my geckos.
i've been misting them more than twice a day, and i keep their substrate moist.
the substrate i'm using is vermiculite... its like, plant stuff that stops soil compaction.
its all i had.
i didnt want to get dirt from outside, cause i didnt know what kind of bugs would be in it..
i'm planning on getting something different, but i dunno what.
i have some bark in there, which is what i found them in.
i have a water bowl that i got at the petstore for my leopard gecko. its about three inches around and three fourths of an inch deep, but i didnt fill it up that much.
i was afraid of them drowning. lol.
i also have a sort of rock thing. i dont really know how to explain it, but it's what one of them is on in the picture.

here's most of my questions though:
what kind of substrate should i get?
how big of a tank do i need for four geckos?
what all do they eat?
do i need a water bowl? if so how big?
any kind of heat lamp?
how hot?
how humid?
what kind of thigns do i need in the tank, like rocks or bark or sticks?

sorry to ask so many questions.. i just like, dont know anything about them and cant find anything online.
:\

Re: Are These Juvenile Mediterranean House Geckos?

Ok for starters, only put as many crickets in there as they'll eat. Keep the extras in a separate container. If you only have a few, you could even keep them in an icecream bucket. While the crickets are in the container you can gutload them with veggies, fruits, and protein. You'll want to dust them with a calcium supplement occasionally before feeding them to your geckos too.

I'd get rid of the vermiculite. Use repti-carpet, paper towels, or if you want something natural-looking, use Bed-A-Beast or something similar. If you use Bed-A-Beast, make sure you pack it down so there's not a lot of loose substrate.

Give them lots of places to hide and things to climb on, they like that. Give them a small water dish, though they'll get most of their water from misting the glass. Mist the habitat occasionally for both drinking water and to keep the humidity up. You'll want the humidity to be moderate-high, or around 60-70%. Temperature should be in the mid 70's at the cool end, and mid 80's at the warm end, with a basking area in the high 80's. If they stay away from there, you can lower it. Night temps can drop to the upper 60's, low 70's.

Make sure you use a screen lid, and you'll want to move them to at least a 20 gallon tank for four of them. They need a photoperiod of about 12 hours of light, but they don't require any special lighting. They're pretty easy to take care of, just don't try and handle them or anything. This species is small, fast, and nervous and really just for looking at.

Also, if you scroll to the bottom of this page you'll see similar threads on HC about these geckos, and you may find some of them useful.

Re: Are These Juvenile Mediterranean House Geckos?

okay, thank you so much! :]
you have been a major major major help to me.
i came to this sight so i could find out all this stuff and you've helped tons.
i couldnt thank you enough
:]]

also, how long do you think it will take them to become adults?
i've heard males can become aggressive...
i haven't sexed them yet.
i dont think i could because they're so young.
so like, when would the males start becoming mean to eachother?
i'd need to put them in a separate tank, right?

Re: Are These Juvenile Mediterranean House Geckos?

I'm not sure what their growth rate is, but it won't take that long. Maybe a year or two at most I would think. Males can be a bit territorial, so you'll have to see how they turn out. They're too small to sex right now. When they're adults, there is a possibility you'll have to separate them. You may wish to get two 10 gallons instead of a 20, just in case.

Re: Are These Juvenile Mediterranean House Geckos?

Good luck in raising them. Here in Israel they are so common (almost in every house) so no one bothers to raise them. Besides, it's illegal for us to raise any of the local reptiles, so they with us in our houses or on the outer walls.
