Active Cage?

hey guys i have..the case of *boring cages* lol i have so many geckos i use paper towel's,toliet paper rolls and a rack system for the baby's

i want something more to look at..for my 4 female Crested Geckos..i want an active setup..is there a way for the poop to be made into dirt or be absorbed by the plants?cause i know if i were to plant anything in the enclosure it will be a nightmare to clean the cage..and these girls poo alot...i mean..alot lol more then the boys..which is sad.atm i clean all the tanks once a week and its easy to do with paper towel's!

how do i get the positive little micro's to thrive to balance everything ?

Re: Active Cage?

The most natural way is to use compostable substrate. Then collect all the droppings in a plastic bucket. While you are doing this you are going to maintain a much bigger but not huge container of earthworms. Keeping earthworms can be tricky. You will need to have your tub of worms on a table. all four legs of that table will need to be resting in a coffee can full of oil. This will keep out parasites and ants that will kill the worms.
The worms will do all the work. They will transform poo back into rich topsoil and substrate.
You could try a vivarium with plants and worms, but you probably would get other bugs, possibly parasitic in the process.

Re: Active Cage?

you can do a vivarium. Og sort of has it. use organic potting soil with coco-husk mixed in. Make sure the soil doesn't have the little white balls. You can see my tanks as an idea since i think they are arboreal and need humidity? stiff plants that can take their weight. branches propped up. The plants will help with the breakdown of poo. So will earth worms. Add some pill bugs from a place that doesn't have pesticide, like the woods. Add a few earthworms too. Spot clean poop that you see. I think i get about 1/4 the poop in my tank scooped up. When i mist, i mist the leaves and it washes the poo and pee into the soil. Springtails (special bug) help decompose that stuff too.

I just posted simple construction in this thread
Help Needed To Construct A New Vivarium

Re: Active Cage?

First you need a decent size enclosure. More square footage of natural substrate would help out a lot. You could introduce insects that feed on feces and decayed matter. I have a good colony of springtails in my monitor enclosure and I do not scoop out anything very often. They seem to dispose of it rather quickly. I'm sure there are many beneficial insects that would help out but that's beyond my scope of things. You might have to get a book or try researching on the net.
You'd want to only use the tiny bugs. Anything of size would undoubtedly get eaten. Then you'd have to worry about whether they're poisonous for your lizards or not.

Re: Active Cage?

mold might grow. Its mostly harmless. My tanks smell earthy. I have some white mold currently on some wood in there. If the poop molds you need to scoop it out. Sometimes the mold helps me find the poop!

Most little white bugs are either springtails or will be gnats.

What are the measurements of that tank? L x W x H? And what is the heat/humidity requirements for them? Will you be able to maintain them, is the question?

Re: Active Cage?

haha, can i have your tank? seriously, where did you find that. I have never seen that size. 36 tall is great. thats 47 gallons!

You would have to relocate them for a little bit while you build this. Draw out a plan and see what you can get to work. Thank tall branches and plants at different levels. Maybe figure out how to suspend a pothos 12" from the top. Like build a custom hook for it or something.

Do you want a background for this? Like what Paige is doing, and what i have in the 90 gallon? Or do you want to keep it all glass?

Aim? Yahoo?

Re: Active Cage?

follow this thread of mine and it will give you some step by step instructions.

The only difference is yours is glass. So attaching the greatstuff would be a little different. I'm still looking for my other construction thread.

Dumpy treefrog vivarium construction

Also, read up through the herp habitats forums. There are TONS of ideas in there and how-tos
