Help Needed....Palm Gecko???

Hi all,

Wandering if anyone out there can help me on this.

I was sitting at my christmas dinner when a friend mentioned that they know someone who has a plam gecko and no longer wants it because its not cuddly like they first thought and that its a bit psycho from time to time and has bitten them here and there. From what my friend told me its still young no older than a year.

They said that a 10gallon tank and all contents (although not sure what they have) come with it and I think they will part with it free of charge. They also mentioned that it has dropped part of its tail which indicates to me that the current owners do not really know how to care for it properly and if they dont want it will probably be neglecting it!

My dilema is I do not know anything about palm gecko's and also there is very little info! i read the skunk gecko stuff and they look very similar from the description I got? should I take the little guy or not? i have not had a gecko or lizard before, i only got my cali king, dont know if its too much to take on from what the skunks gecko sounds like?

Sorry for the length of this thread, please help

Well this is all I found on them as well as far as caresheets go. Good luck, they are actually pretty cool lizards, can be somewhat aggressive though, depends on the gecko, haha

Are you sure it's a Palm gecko? Like this one?
Because these gecko vittatus don't "drop part of its tail", or all of it for that matter, so the poor creature must be in really bad shape.
Beware that they are very aggressive and although they prefer to run, they don't have any problem in biting you. They are very fast and probably one of the hardiest species I've ever seen.
When mine feels more confident, she will open her mouth and hiss when I enter the herp room.
Last but not least, they're a "display" species, they don't tolerate handling.

Well I have not actually seen the little guy yet, its just what has been described to me. they said it was a plam gecko with a green body, white line down its back with yellowish eyes and black and white in its tail. I do not really know much more about it really, just trying to find out more about species first before I make the decision to drive 200+ miles to go see it n possibly take it home.

I have heard that you can tame them with time, especially if they are young which this one is. When you say they bite, how painful we talking? :-) bleeding mess or just breaking the skin?

Another question I have is do yu have to feed crickets as staple? or could worms be used instead? if so which ones are better? i know one of them is really fatty and should only be used as treats!

im still in two minds as not had gecko B4 and really want a leo, but my heart says take the palm gecko as probably not being cared for. (and its free)

Not to put you off but "free" may be a matter of semantics. Depending on the condition of the gecko you could well find yourself with considerable vet bills, far in excess of the cost of a healthy Leo, to get it back to health(if it is saveable at all).
But if you are willing and financially able to take on the challenge then I say go for it.

yeah good point! didn;t really think of that! i think thats its ok in regards to its health I just think its not being looked after properly and not just being forgotten! If not that I have a local vet that takes in so I think I might take it see how it is checked it checked at vets anyway and then go from there!

Thanks for everyones help and I will let you know what happens! thanks again
