food allergies

anyone have food allergies? we know i'm allergic to fish, that one is fatal

But when I was growing up, I had a wheat allergy. Well, apparently I grew out of it, but my allergist thinks otherwise. So I went to the health food store and got a loaf of bread made out of rice, for friggin $4.50!

So I guess what I'm looking for, is ideas on how to replace the wheat in my diet. Dinner is easy since I like rice. I'm trying to find wheat free noodles since I'm a pasta nut.

I'm supposed to cut a whole bunch of things out of my diet, but wheat seems to be the hardest one.

Re: food allergies

No food allergies, although lately I've been unable to eat melted cheese - like mozzarella - without getting sick. It's not a lactose intollerence, because milk doesn't bother me a bit, but for some reason I can't eat cheese. I miss my pizza!

Try breads made with oat flour. They're very good and I don't think they have wheat in them. At least not all of them.

Oh Marsha you'd shrivel up and die if you couldn't eat chocolate. Maybe take a look at tortillas they make those in a zillion ways.

Re: food allergies

I know that at some of my local groceries, they are starting to have small collections of wheat-free (gluten-free) products. I've seen them in Bloom and Safeway. You could use rice noodles (try an Asian grocery). Homemade corn torillas can be kinda fun. Try other grains too, like barley and quinoa. I love quinoa, and it's very high in iron. It was one of the Incas' staple foods. Here's a website that you might find useful:

Wheat-free.org - wheat free recipes, places to eat, suppliers of ingredients

Re: food allergies

No pokeweed? How will you manage?

(Just kidding -- good luck! I wouldn't want to have to avoid all those things. I'd miss the sweet potatoes, strawberries, squash, spinach and beets most.)

Re: food allergies

Yeah, that fruitcake is a real problem to avoid in June... (it's even harder to avoid in December, but I do my best!)
