snake ID help

my parents were out in the okanogan this past summer on their property, and they were finding a bunch of different snakes as they were working. Mostly pacific garter snakes, but there was one that we're having trouble identifying. It was small, about 2.5' or so, and a bright, vibrant yellow, with a few darker brown spots on its side and back. It hissed and tried to strike at my dad repeatedly when he was near it. I showed them pictures of both the pacific rattler, the pacific garter, and the gopher snake, which were the three snakes with yellow on them that I know of in that area. they said that none appeared to be right, as the yellow was too dull, and the head was larger in proportion than the gopher. They were in anglemont, outside of salmon arm up a mountain near the shuswap lake.

any ideas on what kind of snake they saw? just curious.

thanks for any help!
sarah

Without a picture identification is going to be difficult. Because snakes have so many color variations within each species, you may have shown them the correct one but they didn't think it was. Most people look at a snake and already have the images that they have seen on television in there head, they really don't get an accurate mental picture. Show them the gopher snake again and ask questions, "If this snake were just a little lighter" or "ignore the head and just look at the body and pattern" they may start to remember details. Good luck!
